Hello,

I'm new to metal detecting, but always wanted one since I was a kid. This past Christmas after dropping many hints to my husband he bought me my first metal detector. I just broke it out a few weeks ago. My first time around our backyard I yielded lots of nails and a quarter. The second time around I made a great discovery, an 1864 penny. I almost tossed it away thinking it was just a regular penny. After gently rubbing it I spotted the date and couldn't believe it. Today I searched the property again and found an antique copper knife handle. This weekend I am going to hit a beach in Plymouth. Any laws I should be aware of?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome from the Great Lakes state of Michigan.

For metal detecting laws, try this link. Be aware that he paints a pretty gruesome picture, and I truly doubt that things are that grim, but you should check around with local officials anyway.

Hi and welcome to the hobby! First, make sure you read THIS. Please follow this list as close as humanly possible. And those are wonderful first finds. Remember to post pictures, we all like pictures. And most of the time the beaches won't allow MD on a beach if the beach is in season. Your state website should have some info on it though. Good luck, and happy hunting.
