I have been at this for a couple of years now and I have went weeks even months without finding any silver or gold. That is why I always go out without any expectations and just enjoy being out diggin in the dirt. If you go out thinking you have to find something you will get very frustrated. All of the sudden though you have a good day and like fishin it brings ya back out again and again.

I figured it would be rare, and im not planning on doing it a whole lot, so my expectations are very low. You never know though.

Research your sites - the more information you have, the more likely you will select a productive site and the more likely you will find silver or gold. Random hunting produces random results. HH RickO

Start with your local library. Tell the librarian what you are trying to find info about and she/he can point you in the right direction.....it's a good way to kill a winter!!!

Coins, jewelry, etc.

Just a question out of curiosity. I thought it would be one in a million finding something valuable, but it seems like most people on here have found silver or gold items.

I find jewelry fairly regularly, though usually silver rings. Occasionally I'll happen upon gold. Mostly I find jewelry if I'm hunting public places. Not every time I go out by a long shot though. Depends on where you hunt, how many other people are hunting, and just luck sometimes. Older silver coins will take more energy, researching is very helpful and don't forget about talking to old timers. They can give up a lot of information about where people used to congregate at and where there may be old home sites. Otherwise it's just about getting out and having fun. Sometimes it's darn frustrating but the stuff is out there, just got to find it

ryan - They are out there - look for where people wear the most jewelry. I am at 11 solid gold this year so far - dug a ring one time appraised at 3 K bux - friend in another state dug one appraised at 6 K bux. Lower your disc, dig most signals, steve in so az

See thats the thing. I really don't care about jewelry (although it would be great to find). I've always been interested in older coins. One of the reasons I bought my MD is to start a MD coin collection. A coin collection is one thing, but a coin collection in which you FOUND all of them... how cool is that?

Problem is, where do i find old coins. Can you find silver coins at schools? Seems it would be easy to find pre-64 silver at older schools.... but how many kids had liberty dimes or barbers in there pockets even if the school was old?

The older the place your hunting the better chance of finding old coins. Most old schools have been detected so the pickens could be slim. Like RickO said in an earlier post you need to do some research of the area and find out where old places use to be. I look for old farm houses and if I see someone outside I will stop in and ask permission. Some towns have historical information on the web which can give you really good information. On the website for the town I live in it had the location of where the first school in 1836 was located. It just so happened that the land was owned by the fire department since they had a station built on it. One day the fire cheif was going door to door explaining a recent request for funding in the up coming year. Since I saw on the website that the station was built near the old school I asked him permission to check it out he had no problem. Bottom line is do some research don't be afraid to ask permission and have fun. By the way I did find a nice 1907 barber dime there.

Research through the local historical society... older citizens, library etc.... old parks, fairgrounds, old sports fields, places where people once congregated (for the older coins) - picnic grounds, church yards .... all can produce. Look at old maps, what is now fields may have once been an area with a lot of activity. Good luck, RickO

Wow this is old.......

Depends... I only found 5 gold last year and about 75 silver jewelry. This year Im already up 2 gold and 1 silver.

2011 I found like 20 gold and maybe 50 silvers...

It all depends on location and how much time you spend out or just sometimes its luck.

Local library is good but you have the entire internet at your finger tips! Try typing history, and you town or city. Type fire, and your town of city etc. Good Luck.

as my aunt calls it "did you try the interweb thing", AKA internet.

Google parks, schools, old public parks in your area. Find old maps of the areas. the older the property the more likely you will find good old finds.

Beaches, swimming areas are good for gold. Do a search on this site for GOLD in the different fourums and see what type of sites people are having luck at.

play grounds are the best place to start detecting. Kids drop stuff all the time, it allows you easy digging, and you can learn your machine. Its important to know what the machine is telling you.

BEEP BEEP = gold and silver
BEEp BeeP = pull tabs and bottle caps.
