Ok guys. I found what i thought was a coin on the beach today. It was totally encrusted and was making my explorer sing like silver so I thought I would try cleaning it. I did electrolysis on it and something bad happened. I got the crust off and found it to be a 1941 Washington quarter but the whole outside was black and a corner of the coin had disintegrated and exposed the core. The core is a silver color and the outside is totally black. What did I do and what part of the coin is silver? the outside or the core? Maybe I can salvage whatever part for melt value.

wait for someone with more experience to see what they say, but i think the black is just crud that still needs to come off. i do electrolysis then wipe it with baking soda and a drop of water and stuff comes clean. like i said someone will be along shortly to give a better response.

I don't think 90% silver coins have a core. They are what they are all the way through so what you are actually doing is removing all the encrustation from being in the water and exposing the actual coin. Lucky you for finding it! Congrats. Good Luck on future hunts. : )

Its what us beach hunters call a cookie coin and the only value is melt.... its in pretty good shape concidering I have silver quarters that have turned black all the way thru and crumble like a cookie... you can take a knife or hit the coin with a hammer to get the rest off... some may find that harsh but the coin has no value besides melt... I added the clad coin to show you how silver coins vanish lol...

That's such a shame for you beach detectors! What a disappointing way to uncover old silver coins.
I'm glad I find them on land...

Cfmct-PI you were right..All that black was corroded silver and all that was left was a thin silver sliver at the core. I will post pics in a few minutes to show everyone the aftermath of my rage.

I find copper pennies at the beach all the time that have gotten thin from the wave/sand action. They seem like they're about 1/2 the weight.

Well, here it is. All the excitement of finding an old coin and they are dashed by corrosion of this world. I guess this is why God tells us to invest in eternal things because all of this down here will pass a way or corrode. But wait evolution says things are getting better. Lol.. Thanks for your help guys and gals and maybe I can find some silver that is not so cookied.

Yeah, get it real clean, then we can think it is the part that is punched out of the electric boxes.. haha that little token of yours..It was a good try.. salt water and coke can break anything down..

They use electrolysis in sodium hydroxide (lye) on black, silver sulfate encrusted, silver treasure coins to covert the silver sulfate back into silver.
If you saved enough of the black Ag2S corrosion it would be valuable. You could try electrolysis on the black powder itself to get silver. __________________ |
