Default I'm clueless

I found this yesterday in a field where I've found spoons, suspender buckles, horse tack etc. It's brass and is 2.5" X 1.75".

Apparently you found it in a field that indicates past agricultural activity. That's your first clue.

Flat round brass tag with a hole in it is your second clue.

Most likely, what you are looking at is an identifying tag used for farm animals, in particular, ones that are sold at auction or in certain locations where the likelihood of 2 separate herds or flocks intermingling is high and they need to identify and separate them. They pierce the ear of a cow, horse, pig, sheep, goat, etc with a copper or brass loop and dangle a brass plate with a number or logo stamped on it. A practice that is still very common today, but they now use a round painted steel tag.

The other alternatives might be a dog tag.

Thanks Gil. The one thing I wonder about it being a tag is the weight. It's pretty hefty.
