Default Interesting info on air test vs in-ground

I ran across this site and found it to be informative.

Interesting!

Although I've never known anyone to claim a detector that did bad at air tests did good in the ground. On the other hand, I'm sure most believe just because a detector does good at air tests doesn't meant it does good in the ground. Common sense.

However, I don't agree with the "coins in the ground for a long period doesn't increase the magnetic field." Now if it's due to the pinta or halo effect I have no idea, but I do believe time DOES make a coin easier to find. Now rather than testing for the presents of a signal after the target is removed, how about testing a target thats been in the ground for many year with the same target thats never been in the ground. I got a felling the one from the ground, IF NOT CLEANED, will produce a more distinctive signal. Thus proving a coin in the ground over a long period of time produces a better signal.

That's good information!

One thing I do disagree with, however, is the statement that "a machine air tests badly it will detect badly in the soil". The Excalibur and the Sovereign GT both do very poorly in the air tests I have performed using gold rings, clad and silver coins. However, out in the "real" hunting grounds, they perform very well, providing good depth even on small targets. This is just from personal observation, though I suspect other Minelab users have experienced similar situations.

i know for a fact that time in the ground makes the coin easier to find (as long as it stays in the same place). If i drop a quarter in the ground and run my Explorer SE over the spot, it tells me it's there, but it is sometimes broken and not as fluty. I usually just leave it there and the next time i hunt that spot i check to see if it's still there and when i do I get a good solid signal. So something has to be happening there to make the coin sound better after time.

I agree with you Detector, I have found many a coin at greater distances in the ground than on top of the ground. But once it has been taken out and the soiled dirt removed from around it, the detecting distance is reduced. The results of their test leaves some unanswered questions...like why their test showed items found deeper in the freshly dug hole. There must me some effects from the soil make-up at their site.
