Exclamation Newbie to MD and newbie to the forum

Hello all,

My name is Laurén and I am from Long Island. My only experience metal detecting was when I was a child I went MDing on a beach with my grandfather. Ever since then I have wanted to do it again. This xmas, my grandfather and my mother got me a MD. How exciting! I can't wait to use it once the snow melts, however I am so nervous. I have been looking online and there seem to be some crazy rules, regulations and laws and I am down right confused! Would someone be willing to help me out? I'd really like to get started but I don't want to be sent to the clink for a hobby.... Where do you need permits for? How does one get them?

hi Lauren, welcome to the forum from Nova Scotia!
i can't really help you very much with you local laws/regulations, it just seems like every place is different. maybe try "googling" your area or hopefully someone else who knows will jump in here and give you some help.
anyway, happy hunting!

Pete

it's been pretty good up until about a week ago, now it's frozen like a rock and light snow has been falling all day today. the beaches might still be good for a little while and possibly the thicker woods, but i that's about it now until spring.
oh well.... what can ya do, lol.

Welcome from Kansas. Midway U.S.A.
Not all cities allow detecting in their parks and such. You should be able to get information from the courthouse, or better yet, a local dealer. If there are any local metal detecting clubs in your area, they could be a big help too.

Default detecting

Don't assume you can hunt any and/or all local public parks, schools, etc. Contact your local govt. agencies about these sites. Fines and loss of your equipment can be invoked if you hunt where prohibited.

Welcome aboard Lauren.... Best way is to consult a local MD club, and also check with the local police. HH RickO
