Default Minelab X-Terra 705 Coil Question...

What would be the best coil to use for finding gold and silver jewelry on beach conditions with a lot of trash?

Gold high freq. Silver low freq. Lots of trash DD. So maybe a medium freq. DD would be a good compromise? Have you tried the stock coil there yet?

Default Coil Question?

I have a 6" DD 18.75 coil coming. I have tried to use the 9" Concentric coil but having a problem with separation. That is the reason going to the 6" Coil. I went with the HF Coil but wasn't sure that LF was for silver and HF was for gold. Thanks for the info it will aid me or it has persuaded me to possible order a LF Coil.

Thanks, Jasin

The freq. does make a difference but... I had the 18.75 concentric on Xterra 305 and it hit on silver surprisingly well. But it did really lock onto nickles!

Yep, the 18.75 coils work well on gold and most silver.....ya might lose some larger silver like halves or silver dollars, but they aren't that common (around here at least).

I would say the 6" DD 18.75 kHz coil would be the best for you in a VERY HIGH trash situation, it will definetly give you the best target seperation of all the coils available to you, it just doesn't cover much ground. Any DD coil will do better with target seperation than the stock 9" concentric coil because the detection pattern is a straight line, not a circle, like the concentrics. For better ground coverage, consider the 10" DD in either 7.5 kHz or the 18.75 kHz frequency (the higher frequency is going to be more sensitive to fine jewelry than the medium frequency)

I am new to metal detecting and bought a x-tera 705 gold pack, more than I am ready for, is the stock elliptical 18.75khz good for all around use?

It will do, but isn't optimal for coin shooting. It's designed for prospecting, and is best suited for low conductive targets like gold and lead. If you're a relic hunter, it isn't as deep as the 10.5" HF coil. but it will find lead & iron well.

And don't get me wrong. It will find higher conductive targets like coins, but the target bin widths are narrower on high conductors with that coil, so TIDs won't be as stable or accurate as they would be with the 7.5kHz coils. The 7.5kHz coils are the most honest on a wide range of targets. And the 3kHz is the high conductor magnet.

As a new purchase, I'd have to agree....maybe.
The gold pack is the same price as the standard. Since you'll want a DD coil at some point anyway, the gold pack is a good way to go because it starts you out with a more expensive coil to buy than the standard concentric.
BUT.....if gold and relics aren't your thing, after getting to know the machine and purchasing any other frequency or small DD coil, the HF eliptical coil will collect dust. I can't even remember the last time that I used my HF.

The only reasons that I don't sell my HF DD is because I already have it, and I don't know what I may encounter tomorrow that might make me sorry if I did. I don't prospect, or hunt for gold and/or relics specifficly as I'm primarily a coinshooter. So for my purposes the HF coils are the last choice. The MF DD and LF CC are the coils that I prefer, and when a LF DD becomes available I'll be on it like stink.

The coil that comes on the gold pack is really good in trashy places I able to get a dime next to a bottle top. I would say get the gold pack if you don't have the 705 already because the concentric coil comes up for sale more then the gold pack. Heck a guy on here was selling for of 90 bucks a while back only bad thing about the DD coils is that they are not water proof for that you need either the coiltek coil or the NEL if you have a x-terra made before this year

Not quite factual. The 6" coils (HF DD & MF CC) are waterproof, as are the 9" CC's. It's just the 10.5" DD's and the eliptical that are only water resistant, not waterproof.

my bad I didn't know the 6" DD coil was waterproof

In heavy trash I always used the 6" HF DD coil. It was great on separation and should be good on gold. I am primarily a coinshooter and do not dig a lot of pulltab signals to find gold but I am sure that it would do well. The 705 is a great and very versatile machine. I regret selling mine to get an E-trac and have since traded the E-trac for the Deus. Good luck in your hunt.
