I don't know for sure Hoze but I think the ground freezes solid before the machines stop working. May some of our Canadians can help you with that.

I think you can detect in any temperature, I know I have, as long as you can dig the
target. The only time Ive had a problem with temp is when my bounty hunter was in the trunk of my car @ 110 degrees in tucson az. It acted real un-stable, chattering like a crazy person. After about ten minutes or so in the open air it settled down though, and smooth sailing after that.(found a cool heart-shaped lockett that day). by the way, you dont say why you asked that question, and I am a real expert with the bounty hunter 505 id so feel free to p. message me for any advise. its a really hard work fast detector. Some companies have listed the operation temps for their machines in the owner's manual. Batteries don't like real cold weather either.

I had wondered about that myself, so......
Took the BH Pioneer 505 out this afternoon. Temp 20 Degrees F. and 7 inches of snow on the ground and it still hits every target in the MD Garden. Items are 2 to 8 inches deep. The snow is very soft so the coil was nearly on the ground. It is too cold to dig so I came in after I checked the 10 targets. Looks like I'll have to wait till next March or so before we do any more swinging in Upstate NY. Good luck to the Snow Birds that go down South for the winter. I have a 505,&it go's off all over the place sitting still on the ground? in all metal mode, with discrimination,at 12:oo,&sensetivity,at 2:oo.What setting should I be using? I haven't gone any where yet other than my own yard. I have found some solid iron and lots of pie plates and 1 quarter. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I live in Burlington WI and I was out today marking spots to dig after spring thaw. My detector seemed to be working fine. Pinpointer only found one target on the surface. Whew a penny. The rest are under frozen ground, boohoo.

Different types of BH's are better than others at PP.....BH detectors vary in their performance.

I've been out in the cold with my 505 with a frost about 2"deep. BH works fine. Now that we've got a lot of snow on the ground it's put away until at least March, unless we have a big warm up that melts the snow & frost. Use this time to look for places to MD.
