Default Shield Nickel Cleanup

I found this 1869 Shield Nickel and would like to clean it up a bit more. Can anyone suggest a way to do this without ruining it?

Already looks severely pitted. Not sure even if you cleaned it it'd be much better. Nice find though.

I am sorry to say but I think your nickel is rusted beyond repair since it looks pitted from the corrosion. So anything you do might only make it look worse, however since its not worth anything in that condition you don't have much to loose. That said here is a link to some nickels I cleaned up that turned out ok, but they weren't as bad as yours to start with. You have to scroll down to read how I did it:
