Default Shotshell headstamp id help? - NEW PICS

Okay, I know this is a funny one for me, but I have one that has me stumped. I have no idea as to the manufacturer. It isn't marked!

Here is what I know about the head:

1. - Came from New England
2. - Other shells that were with it range from the 1880's-1950's (most are pre WWI)
3. - US, Canadian and English headstamps were found in the same area.

Here is what I have found with my research:

1. So far, of the US made shells, UMC and Remington are the only two that I have found that made unmarked shells. Neither of them look like this one.
2. The side design is the same as shells made for Sears. I cannot find evidence of a Sears shell that is unmarked.
3. I have found some European unmarked shells but once again, none like this.

I don't have access to a camera right now so the scanner will have to work. When I get my camera, I will get better pics.

If anyone has any leads, please let me know.

Thanks,
Doug

That shell used to have lead in it. But no leads.

Sorry had to. Nice shell btw. That 20 gauge shell I was telling you about is a REM-UMC No. 20 Nitro or something like that.

Perhaps it is a "generic" shell that was sold unloaded to various dealers around the country who then loaded them to suit local needs. And the dealer information was in the top wad?

That's my guess. I just can't put a manufacturer to it. There is usually little tell tale marks that id's different manufacturers. I'm guessing the id will be in the design on the side. I really have to get some more pics taken.

You mentioned getting the dealer info off of the top wad. That is so true. There is one Winchester shell that was sold as empties for "house brands". There are over 400 known different "local dealer brands" for that line.

Here are a couple of better pics of the headstamp and the side of the shell. If anyone has seen this disign on other shotgun shells (other than Sears) please let me know who the manufacturer is.

Thanks,
Doug

You're the shotgun shell expert! Normally WE call for you to help. Might have to show someone outside of this forum. I really hope you get it IDed though.

This is the first headstamp that I have in my collection that I haven't been able to ID the manufacturer! It's driving me nuts!

BTW - is the 20ga you found a NITRO or NITRO CLUB?

Sorry I can't help on the ID Doug. I'm sure you will come up with it sooner or later. I never thought I'd see the day where you were stumped on one of these. Good luck,
Keith

Yeah, it's REALLY bugging me! I'm beginning to think that it might be a generic Sears shell. EVERY high brass Sears head that I have, have the exact design on the side. They are the ONLY heads that have that design in my collection to date (it's pushing 700 now). I have high brass Sears ranging from the 1910's-1960's and they are all the same.

I am going to start going through all 700 again and see if I can find anything that I might have missed.

BTW - There was one posted on this forum a few months ago that stumped me. In my defense, it was an Italian headstamp and I have almost no reference material for Italian shells.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once again, if anyone finds a headstamp with the same side design as the one pictured above, I would appreciate it if you would either post who the manufacturer is or PM me.

Thanks,
Doug

i've got some 10 gauge shells here that are labelled similar, only difference besides being full length brass, they also have "Kynoch . Birmingham" which almost encircles the base and the "No 10".

will try to take a close up photo if you'd like.

Don't count me out yet. I will get this one! I found a resource locally that has over 500 images of 19th century and early 20th century shells. Hopefully there will be some clues there.

BTW - I was considering contacting CSI. From what I have seen on television, they have databases of EVERYTHING at their fingertips.

Doug

Keep an eye out. You will see the title changed to solved...hopefully soon.

Hi,

I have checked this against some Eley and Kynoch shells and I don't believe they are of the same manufacturer. I would love to see the pics though.
