Default what to do during winter

It just started snowing a couple days ago and, to put it simply, I'm going insane. If this is what a couple days feel like without MD'ing, I don't know how to deal with a couple months. Today I had an idea, do you think the local bank would let me exchange a couple bucks for the equal value in pennies? Then I could spend my free time looking for wheat pennies instead of brooding. Does anyone know if a bank would let me do this? Any other ways to fix my metal detecting craving would be worth their weight in gold to me. (I suppose thoughts are weightless, but the phrase is the most accurate one that came to mind)

Quite a few folks here do just that, they call it coin roll hunting or CRH for short. I think alot of those who do this hunt for silver coins still in circulation, but some do pennies as well.... Yes, banks allow you to do this, but it's best to have one bank you buy from and one you drop off at so they don't get miffed at you....HH!

Why not clear a patch of snow somewhere and then MD it? Just bring a snow shovel with you and clear an area and dig EVERYTHING. I bet you'll find some goodies.

I haven't found anything yet on ebay that was truly "unsearched".. No such thing.
One guy advertised "Truly unsearched roll of buffalo nickels - all dateless". I sent him a message and said "If they're truly unsearched then how do you know they're all dateless"...no reply

Default Duluth MN..I like it

I remember Duluth as I was stationed there for two years. Yes it does get cold..but here's what I would do. I would Tot-Lot hop..hit those swings (chips) and then walk around the Basketball court. Lots of lay-downs in a six foot width all around the court. Good Luck.

I just had an idea. As I was taking a walk I noticed all the snow piles from people shoveling. Maybe it would be worth checking out the piles next to large parking lots like the ones for target or the grocery store. As people fumble for car keys with gloved hands some things must fall out of their pockets. Then when the snow is plowed into a pile so is whatever was lost. I can’t wait to see peoples reactions when they see me detecting on top of a twenty foot tall snow pile in 5 degree conditions .

The ground here freezes hard after Thanksgiving. The flat desert doesn't help winter sports. I read old issues (5-10 years) of treasure hunting magazines sold on ebay. Some good info there. I also visit the library at least once a week for research and maps. If I'm really bored and the Dallas Cowboys/Denver Broncos are losing as usual, I'll get a can of car wax and wax the metal shafts/rods on my detectors. For the plastic, a LIGHT coat of Armor-All. If it's really nasty outside, I go to the Q-Tips to get the grime out of the areas like where the coil screws onto the lower shaft.

I treat my truck the same way in the summer. It drives my neighbors crazy!! What can I say, military upbringing and military career have an impact!!!

I would hunt the Rio Grande, but there are no tides except when it floods during the spring snow melt........

N.P. Coin roll hunting can be better than not MDing but theres not a lot out there. There are some wheaties left and a few(very few) silver coins primarily dimes. But its fun. I've gotten some Mercs and Buffaloes out of rolls. Good luck.

N.P. I forgot to mention that winter is time for research. Old maps, newspaper archives etc. Then you'll know where to start when spring comes.

Wait until it melts, you won't even need a detector. Actually you should detect it before it gets that far or someone might beat you to it.
