Default The ULTIMATE Detector -- Are You Kidding Me ???

I enjoy reading back issues of treasure hunting / metal detecting magazines, and I ran across an ad with the most outrageous claims I have ever seen. The ad appeared in the September 1993 issue of "Western & Eastern Treasures" magazine -- page 43 (I have scanned the ad and posted it below).

It claims this detector can find a small wedding band at 6 miles! ...and it can penetrate 1/2 mile of rock! I've always considered W&E Treasures mag to be reputable, so the inclusion of this ad has me scratching my head.

I have only been seriously detecting since 2005 so I was not into this fine hobby 17 years ago when this ad was published. Do any of you detecting veterans know anything about this machine? Has anyone ever seen one or used one?

I hesitate to mention it because it just gets people hyped up and sometimes banned when responding to threads about this, but divining rods will probably work better...if you believe in that sort of thing.

The only thing I know that can sniff out gold at 6 miles is my girlfriend.

The only ad in my somewhat current issue of "Lost Treasure" is for Simmons Scientific Products out of N.C. They sell divining rods and divining pendants (just hold it over a map, and you'll be rich!!!

Funny thing is there are no user reviews or testimonials from any customers on their website.....probably don't want the IRS coming after their treasure!! But they have "thousands of satisfied customers."

The subject of dowsing comes up from time to time. Then there is also the subject of those that try to make obscene profits by selling ... junk at outrageous prices to unsuspecting people that fall for the pseudo-technical
mumbo jumbo.

Both subjects can be discussed as long as the discussion is kept civil. Here are some threads where the subject has been discussed before. But please, read this first.

Yea, I probably shouldn't have brought it up...
I still remember the mess with Oldtown.
Sorry.

Yes, Carl Moreland has investigated, dissected and published many reports on the so called "Long Range Detectors" or LRLs, before taking on his new job as White's Electronics director of engineering.

Thank you for posting the link to Carl Moreland's report. No, I was not considering tracking down one of these "fantastic" machines to take the place of my E-trac...I was simply curious how someone would attempt to justify such grandiose claims.

Even the people here that do have a belief in dowsing would probably never fall for a scam like this.

Nope, it was the September, 1993 issue of "Western & Eastern Treasures"

You're correct. I do believe in dowsing generally because I've done it. I can't explain it, but I've done it to help friends find water lines, sewer lines and such, and I don't know if I could do it under "scientific observation". My uncle taught me how and I've never been able to teach anybody else how to do it. Never found anything valuable unfortunately. Regarding skeptics, I totally understand, it's strange and unexplainable even to me.

I absolutely don't want to start and old style "Jennings / Old Town" throwdown here. Just thought I'd throw in my two cents in defense of an odd "gift"!

Default If it were April

If it was the April edition I could see the mag playing an April fools joke on its readers...
