Default beep beep... (the misadventures of my first day)

So there i was. Standing in my front yard, watching the sunrise crawl its lazy self over the horizon. I could see the lines in the grass where the dew remained in liquid form, temporarily safe in the shadows of the trees, cars, houses and other random objects. I remember thinking "This should be fun" as i turned the knob and felt the click of the on position. I dug out the little notes i had stuffed in my shirt pocket earlier in my insomnia fed quest for knowledge, and started sorting through them. I found the one that i was looking for, a basic walkthru of the settings and where they should be set at. I twisted knobs, and flipped a switch, not really understanding what i was doing, or what the differences really are. I set the machine for "Full bore". Being a noob, I figure i got some catching up to do in the department of collecting trash, and i can't stand the thought of possibly passing over something juicy thinking it is a nail or pop top.

I started swinging the "Coil" back and forth, no doubt all wrong. I made a silent swing, and then another. I took one footstep, and another swing... "BEEP". The loud, high pitched yelp almost caused me to drop the machine, and i think i pee'd a little. My heart was doing it's best to jump completely out of my body. I dropped to one knee and whipped out my giant buck knife, and for the first time in my life I "Dug a Plug". In the plug, I found a piece of what must have BEEN metal and was now a solid white piece of dust held together by a grass fart. i gently squeezed it, and it went away. Disappointed, but FAR from discouraged, I picked up the "magic wand" and started waving it around once again. "BEEP". Great Gogely Mogely... I almost dropped it again. Wowza that is hard to get used to.

This time, I started digging and within seconds, I knew i was pulling up something big! I was really hoping it would have been worthy of a call to the Smithsonian, but it was just an old, flat Mt. Dew can. Instantly i was in a trance. I could not quit looking at the can. Who drank this cold, sweet beverage on the Hot Oklahoma day? "I NEED MORE" I thought to myself as i stood up and started swinging the stick some more. BEEP, pull tab. BEEP, pull tab. BEEP old pepsi lid. BEEP pull tab. BEEP socket. BEEP another socket (both metric i think and lost out of my collection by my son.) BEEP air compressor chuck. BEEP cut off end from a cord. BEEP half of an old style pull tab. BEEP old rabies tag from a dog collar.

I couldn't help but feel like a young boy, before the cruel world killed my imagination. With each piece of trash, a different story. I will surely find some coins eventually, and maybe if i am super lucky in 20 years or something, I can put together a collection of found junk to interest the Smithy afterall, or at least the "Pushmataha county museum of dumb junk", but until then, I will be more than happy to be mesmerized by random metalic trash... My wife even made a new joke about it. "What happened baby? The metal "junk" you used to be so interested in was shiny at least."

So, in closing, I guess you could say i enjoyed it immensly, and am feverishly waiting my next opportunity to swing my thing!!!

Thanks for reading my goofy little story. I hope it encourages someone to re-think the process of finding "trash".

I loved your little story. If you think digging junk is fun, just wait till you find a REAL goodie. : ) My best early find came on day 3 when I dug a 1888 Indian Head penny. From then on I've been on a quest for old coins and relics. Keep up the digging and the good stuff will show up. Good luck. : )

Thumbs up

Congrats,
the way you write, you can be well a famous novelist
We all dream of finding some rare, old and valuable relics.
But the fact is these come seldom. This hobby is like fishing,
or gambling- all matter of luck.
Self confidence and endurance are constantly needed.
The day will come !

COINS...You think we look for coins?
I think you are operating under a misconception...

So THATS how it works. I wonder, do they make a MD that only hunts tabs? The "Tabmaster" or something?

that was a pretty funny read for sure!

Congrats on getting started Pen , this is a fun and sometimes very rewarding hobby . It does require a lot of persistence and patience but ever now and then you will have a day that makes it all worth waiting for . Don't give up or get discouraged nothing comes without learning and working for it . You know what they say someone 's trash is someone Else's treasure , some of the relics are just as interesting as the coins we find . Good luck and good hunting .

Is it just me, or does anyone else think he should contact Floridabill about making a t-shirt?

"Swing Your Thing!" Large print across the back of the t-shirt

Something like that could be on the front. Give the print that faded worn out look...Ahhh..I can see it now!

I'm not quite as excited about junk as you are, but I do like digging up just about anything that beeps. I dug a 2' by 18" hole to find a steel hoop or ring (12" diameter,) but a tree root ran right through it. Talk about a cruel joke!

I will take a picture or two later this morning and post. BUT FIRST... I have a totlot to hit, Just as soon as the sun comes up enough for me to see my way down the hill.

I don't know anything about the T shirt or club stuff you are talking about, CTKid, But i am glad i could inspire an idea! Just so you know, I prefer an extra large, and my address for shipping of my new shirt is......

On a serious note, I am pretty excited this morning. This will be my first trip outside my own yard. Getting off the porch to run with the big dogs, as it were. As excited as I am right now, All it would take is a crusty penny or two to inspire another silly story... Lucky you

Ok, Enough online goofing off. The sun will be up in minutes, and i need to gather my gear. C YA
