Default How to use headphones?

Hello all I have a weird question about headphones.
I bought a paiir to use with me ACE, as it is too loud.
I tried them and found the headphones to be a major pain in the A$S.
This is what happened. When I detect. I hear a target that I want to dig, I set down the detector. Had to take the headphones off. I dig the hole and then from a kneeling position I grab the detector about a foot up from the coil and wave it over the plug and the hole. This is were the problem comes in. I'm not wearing the headphones so I can't hear the beep. When I finish filling the hole I then have to pick up the detector and replace the headphone. It really seemed to slow me down.
Is there a better way?

I agree with you. I have an Ace and it is loud without headphones. And when it is time to dig it is a pain in the a$$ to keep taking them off and on. Plus I think wearing them doesnt look exactly cool. LOL. Here is what I do. If I am in a secluded place with nobody around or even an open place with nobody around I dont use them. If there are people around I will use the headphones. Now when I put them down and pick up the Ace to go over the hole again I just make sure the headphones are facing me and I can still hear the tones well enough. I am only using it to see if the object is still buried or in the plug. After that I goto my pinpointer anyway. Hope this helps...

If you want to use headphones, get a pair with a volume control.

IMO, the only time I would wear headphones with an Ace is if there's too much ambient noise around making it hard to hear the beeps, or if I don't want to attract attention.

I believe some detectors produce soft sounds and loud sounds based on target distance. With that type of detector, headphones would come in handy. You'd be able to hear a quiet beep with the phones on. But since the Ace produces all tones at the same volume, I don't see any advantage to using them.

Um... why take the headphones off? I don't take mine off to dig, nor does anyone else I've ever hunted with.

Depending on the length of the cord it can be a pain. I know where he is coming from...

Never take mine off either. Am not understanding this. Unless the cord is very short. WOLF

I was wondering about this myself. There didn't seem to be any difference in the tone with or without headphones. Seemed to be the same old beeps to me.

I stopped wearing them also because it interfered with my detecting. The cord was not long enough. It would be ok if I turned the MD around so that the display was near the hole, but I like to wave dirt over the coil when I am digging out the hole and it seemed a bit awkward to do it with the coil behind me.

I'll have to practice and see if I can get the hang of keeping them on while I dig. The cord just seems to get in the way.
Wireless Headphones with vol. control would be AWESOME!!!! Do they make such a thing?

Batteries last way longer with headphone use.
Way longer!
Plus, most people will not bother you if you have headphones on...most, not all.

Also, get a Pro Pointer as soon as you can.

you can make an extension cord for yours ,,just go to Radio Shack and get the parts,,,,but you need a volume control also,,,don't know if RS has a inline volume control that you could incorporate in the extension cord,,,,

I am just going to use a set of Ipod earphones. All I need is to get an adapter for my Ace

I leave mine on while digging. Just took some trial and error to figure out where to set the detector down so that it worked out okay.
My headphones are just the cheap Bounty Hunter ones but make a huge difference in what I hear from my m6.
Also the batteries do last alot longer.

We have a pair we use at home when one of us wants to watch TV without disturbing the other. They do have a tiny volume control wheel. Got them at Radio Scrap. Rechargeable, pretty expensive - over-the-ear, not muff type. I think they were about $70 or so. I was thinking I might experiment with them - I'm curious whether they'll interfere with the coil (they're labeled 2.4 GHz - can one tell if that would interfere?).

I got a pair of these http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=300365803195 with volume control. The cord is long enough to leave them on while digging. They seem to work great for me.

For my Ace and my XLT, I need a longer cord on my headphones. My Tek 9000 is a hip mount, so I can use a shorter cord.

So, the Ace has an external speaker but no volume control?

Meaning the only way to adjust volume is to insert headphones with volume control, right?

edit: If so, is that for all Ace models?

edit2: answered by spm673 =)

Yes. I don't think many, if any detectors have a speaker volume control built in.
Have you searched youtube and actually listened to the tones these put out?

It would bother me, SkiWhiz is not a fan and also several others.
Some don't mind at all.
We call them "The Crazy People".
