Welcome modern pirate from Chicago..I'm fairly new too and my Ace 250 does the job...I'm well past learning curve of say 100hrs...but still learning. I do everything beach water w/ means in about a foot a water...dry sand ..wet sand...dirt. A pin pointer is a must have! Other tools like a good digger or sand scoop you'll figure out ...about 400bucks.....less. Than for sure....good luck and ...HH

Yes an Ace250, Tesoro silver Umax or Fisher F2 would be a good starter detector. Tesoros do not have a screen. They are a beep and dig detector. Ace250 and F2 will tell you what it thinks you are digging.

Like all VLF on saltwater, You have to back off on the sens.! Did you say $300....well the ace 250 is a great MD, But a new sheriff in town....his/her name is ACE 350! You should get more depth with the 350 DD larger coil! g/l
