Default Another Old Boise Park and Another War Nickel 8/26/2010

Anybody think the ancient Greek coin is a fake???

Anyway, I got to go out on a hunt after work today for about three hours. I was able to find a few more Wheaties. The last target I dug was spotty 12-17 at about 8 inches. Turned out to be a nice 1942-S War Nickel. I love it when I dig a spotty signal and when I get my Sunray in the hole, it's nice and solid! What a feeling no matter what kind of coin it is. As long as it's not iron, I'm happy.

It's a nice way to end a hunt.

The gold coin is actually plastic and was an eyeball find - Made in China of course

Thanks for stopping by and HH.

-Mark

When I found my war nickle last week with the X-Terra 305 it also had the spotty 12-16 signal. Your nickle is in great shape. Congrats.

WN's are a strange beast as they can ring in at 12-13 through 12-31 or there bouts. That's why I like finding them. For me, I dig according to depth. If it's -6 inches it's usually trash. If it's +6 inches its usually a goodie.

Found a Canadian dollar that was gold colored. I was stunned then logic overrode all my amazment and wonderment before I even wiped it off to read it. Although I love it when it happens. A definate perk.

Default Yep,

I agree, war nickels on my machine read anywhere from 16 to 19 and can bounce around with the signal depending on how deep they are. The one thing that is consistant however is the signagraph readings on my DFX. Any clustered or solid bars, I dig it!!

Nice finds!!

Nice Mark! Sorry I was no home. I'll be back in town late Sunday night. I work tuesday, then have the rest of the week off.

Nice one.

Strangely enough, I picked up my first War Nickel of the year this morning, a 43P, along with a 45D wheat. The signal on it bounced around 12/13 through 12/17. It was only a couple of inches down and kept going back to 12/13 so I dug but expected it would be trash because the area was littered with tabs, but voila!

By the way, any tips on cleaning a war nickel? Mine looks horrible. Not as bad a regular nickel but still a good crust with only a little silver coming through here and there.

Yes. I don't normally advise cleaning silver coins, but because WN's aren't worth all that much (unless it's abnormal strike, etc...) , you can. The trick is to when to stop cleaning. Use some Baking Soda and make a paste with water. Lightly rub the nickel until you get the desired look. Too much rubbing will give the nickel a cleaned look that is really shiny, so stop when the nickel looks antiqued. Rinse the paste off often between rubbings to monitor the affect. Be careful because the paste cleans fast, so go easy.

Thanks Romeo -- that worked pretty good. It's still got some seriously attached black spots here and there, but I'm afraid if I go after it much more I'll need sunglasses to look at it.
