Totally agree... HF is better than not having one... you have to pretty much almost be touching the item (pros and cons on that), whereas the Propointer will find it a few inches away etc...

But again, for 16 or so bucks, grab the HF until you can buy the PP... it will help... then, once you are able to get the PP, wow! Big difference, and much nicer to use etc... basically turn on, use and turn off. The HF one I would have to turn on, set the sensitivity, check it against my watch to make sure it was working then use it... again, HF better than nothing, much better than nothing, but keep saving for the PP... a difference of night and day... really rocks. That and the Lesche digger.... good to go!!!

Ok, one other quick update... since my last update... have found a good number of Gold Items, and great number of silver items and of course the basic, tons o junk, lol.

Really comfortable with the machine etc...

Find my ideal, is these three items:

1.) My Machine
2.) PP
3.) Lesche Digger

Good to go.

Only other update is, for me, I have really simplified my "hunting":

> Hunt in AM
- Get a hit
> Toggle to MIN Disc
- Sounds the same/identical --> Dig It
- Sounds a "bit" different" ----> Probably dig it
- Completely gone, or radically different sound ---> Walk away.

Thats it.

Its so easy to find and dig items with the Lesche and the PP, that thsi has really worked for me, and probably is the reason I have hit Gold and silver, at a decent rate (I know, some of ya'll really nail it everytime you get out... but for me, I probably hit silver 90% of the time and gold maybe every 3-5th outing).

I also tend to agree with what someone said a while back in another post... I think every field etc... contains gold and silver... just be methodical, slow your pace and ensure you cover the grounds with your coil... makes a difference.

Happy Hunting folks!

Ron

Great Posts. Thanks for sharing. Nice to read the details and follow ups. I can tell a nice fat quarter and proud of it! I love it when I know I've got a great sounding and looking hit and I take my good sweet time digging it too. It works for me................most of the time. Its still not an exact science, but worth it.

great thread. I too bought a Tesoro Umax and am trying to learn it's language. this has given me a lot to think about and look forward to learning. sounds like I need to invest in a pointer too. I sure can find pull tabs and bottle caps and trash alum cans like a mad man. I hunted about 5 hours yesterday, but found nothing but trash, very frustrating. I know it takes time to learn, just wish I would have found at least one coin to keep the interest going. I found myself pooping out after a while. Oh well, back to the drawing board and learn some more.

Great posts!

One little thing that might help some: keep the sensitivity turned down. This depends in part on the soil you hunt in, obviously. But, you aren't looking for items 12 to eighteen inches deep. The lower sensitivity helps you learn the language of your machine easier and quicker.

You can rest assured that I learned that lesson the hard way. In fact, I still run low sensitivity in "coin and jewelry" mode.

Ditto. My MXT will pick up on every pea-sized hot rock in the tot lot if I run it in default in the coin and jewelry mode........Hey, do we have the makings of a song here???........."Pea-sized hot rock in the tot lot!"

Great posts, really enjoying this thread!! I'm a Silver uMax user also, got the HF pinpointer early on. When BigBoar put up the group buy deal for the Garrett PP and the Lesche digger for one price I was the second to jump in, I think. Meant to go out this morning but at 6 am decided not to
Tomorrow is my 62nd birthday so may not get out then, either
Happy hunting and happy fourth of July!!

Default One more...

Howdy, another quick update... for those "hunted out" sites... probably not. I found, you just have to look at them "differently". There is tons of advice on the board about how to hunt the hunted out sites (I have two, that I think "I" myself had hunted out, pretty well)... well worth heeding... but by "look at them differently", for me anyways, tip is:

Normally I look at a field and ask, where do people play? Where are the odds the best etc etc.... and nothing wrong with that at all, has served me well... but, once I feel I have hunted out a place... I ask now:

Where do I think No One has been? What are the least likely places another Md'er has hit (within reason of course)... using this, I have brought some of my hunted out places back to life for a bit... scored a nice small gold wedding band, as well as a nice heavy silver chain the other night, using that strategy. Both were at around the 4 inch mark, so I know it was not "fresh". Lol. And both were found in locations I thought no one would have ever walked, never mind lost something. Always amazes me.

Anyways, just thought it worth mentioning... and oh yeah, are there hills? Hunt the bottoms... then walk up those things while swinging... you may be pleasantly surprised.

Of course new unhunted territory is always a riot.

HH!!!
