Default Flying with a medal detector

I'm traveling to montana tomorrow for a family trip, so I would like to take my medal detector and do some investigating. Will i get in trouble for bringing my coils on the plane? Also does anybody have any suggestions in the Bozeman area?

I wouldn't think it would be an issue but then again I've seen nail clippers taken so who knows?

I read somewhere else on this forum that you have to call the airline and ask to see if they allow metal detectors on board.

Delta let me take one as checked luggage but not carry-on. Thing was folded up in its original box and was of perfect carry-on size. After the uniforms huddled at Key West International they decided it had to go under the belly. Too much like something they didn't really understand.

I don't know what Delta's real policy is, if they even have one, but I can tell you one look with the X-ray scanner had them huddling like rabbits with a fox outside. All very concerned. Even after an eyeball examination of the thing in the box, the uniforms looked perplexed. So under the belly it went.

I did not dare even venture a question like, "So what difference does it make where this bomb rides? under the belly or under my seat?" I just let it go and did not utter a sound after their decision. Not worth it.

LOL. Yeah, probably not the question to ask unless you want the rubber gloves to come out. You could have told them it was a tribal medicine stick. Then again those guys don't really have a sense of humor.

No sense of humor at all. I wouldn't even dream of making any kind of security joke at an airport let alone utter the word "bomb".

Just Fed-X Overnite it and insure it for 2 times it's value. It will be there when you land.

The problem arises because of all the wires and electronic gadgets attached to a box. Too much like a bomb. Add to this if one uniform at the airport happens to know they use devices like yours to sniff out mines, "bombs". There's that word again.

To be honest, I would not expect a security agent to let one through as carry-on. I tried for carry-on and had to put it below. What they didn't know was my accepted cell phone had a radio transmitter that could have activated my metal detector at 35,000 feet and from the comfort of first class. Champagne in one hand, detonator in the other.

PS. Never flown 1st. class in my life. It was a joke!!!!

I think we all may have just made some watch list somewhere . I can understand their concern but "The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself". Lets pad everything and make the world a squishy place for everyone (gets off his soap box). Also they will let you take a laptop on and there is no way they have wiring diagrams of what the internals look like or a cell phone like you said.

Do a forum searxch, theres a few threads regarding this. I know first hand that travelling is no issue, just put your machine and differ etc, take the batteries out, and put it in your checked bag. I've never had any issues.

Isn't it crazy. I always figure the next loud noise we read about on a plane will be a C4 charge shaped like a laptop battery. All the X-ray will see is a solid rectangular mass where the battery sits.

Okay, enough with scaring the women and children. Best idea is mailing it like the guy above suggested. I've done this with other things before. Works fine.

Sectshun8, you've actually walk on board with your detector? Must be a case of getting the right personal at the gate. Good for you.
