Default ? for those familiar with cache hunting

I live in Wyoming and my family has some property that was known to be traveled across by the likes of Butch Cassidy. There were also some less famous cattle rustlers/robbers known to occupy the area.

My question is, is anyone familiar with the stone map markers like the ones in the link below?:

http://okietreasurehunter.blogspot.c...k-part-ii.html

The reason I'm asking is that I've come across such a stone with a hole bored into it. The stone is "mounted" into the side of a canyon wall with the hole bored in the center of the stone.

It absolutely was placed there and you can see behind it from one side of it. *The view isn't very good but is obvious that it doesn't open up to anything larger and there isn't much space behind the stone.

The stone that is "placed" in the side of the canyon wall is approximately 14-20 inches high and about the same width. Approximately 6-10" thick. *Haven't been by it for quite awhile and am estimating the dimensions.

I am interested in hearing the outcome of this. Did you take any pics of it?

My time on the internet and looking into MD'ing has definitely brought up some interesting day dreams

When I came across the stone I referenced above, I didn't think a lot about it.

On the back side of the stone (back of it when facing the canyon it's mounted in), there is somewhat of a small cavern that can be viewed from the circle that is bored out or from the right side.

It's fairly easy to see behind it and it appears there has been a fire behind (at some point).

I don't have any pics but will get some. It'll be a bit before I can get back in there to get the pics.

Getting a metal detector this week and hope to be in the area of the marker within a few weeks. Due to the isolation of area, I want to get some practice with the detector before heading in for a weekend.

I'm figuring the stone marker is a pipe dream but it's interesting. Definitely looking forward to MD'ing an old outlaw cabin area (cabin is burned down), post office etc...
