Default is this a sword?

What looks like a sword is at least 22 inches found under 7 inches of wet sand during low tide. At high tide this object would be under water., the handle is wood looks intact. Is loose but still looks well. The edge looks equally sharp on both sides and the tip is sharp. I was playing Tarzan sticking it in the mud. What gets me is why is the handle still there. Is it because this object is not as old as I think?? The place found is city island in new York city, once inhabited by Indians, the place now is a boating community and all restaurants. A lot of boats and sails were made here.

Not a sword but it does look like a spear of some kind (don't think it would work as a harpoon). Could a spear shaft have been attached to the 'handle' ?
The reason I say not a sword is its just to short which brings you down to a large dagger but the blade shape is not suited to that and the handle would not be comfortable unless it feels better than it looks. Plus a dagger would have a round metal pommel to balance the weight of the blade.
Don't worry re the wood being to good. I detect beaches where after storms you can see prehistoric tree stumps which the water and sand have preserved for thousand of years.

yup! could be a dagger. nothing looks like would be attache to the handle. the handle does feel confortable and the carving is very good. i do not know if it had a hand guard at one time.

Probably not more than 5 years old IMHO. You might be able to find replicas online unless it was home made.

Looks like the tip of an ornamental sword to me, African.

Id guess some kid was trying to spear fish and his old man isnt too happy.
