Yes the Harbor Freight pin pointers are not water
proof on the rod. But, it is an easy fix. The tip comes off easy. Just pull it out a little and glue it back in with water proof glue. Caution!! If you pull too far, you will break the wire. ![]() ![]() ![]() Now mine has a water tight wand, but I use my ProPointer. The HF is my back-up, __________________ |

I coated the whole rod with liquid tape (rubber).

Great "TIP" LOL, question on the HF pinpointer, does yours stop working properly when it gets hot? The warmer mine gets the more I have too turn down the sensitivity, eventually it stops working all together and when I push the button the audible alarm sounds constant. Any suggestions? Thanks

Biggdogg, mine does the same. Somewhere on this forum I found someone out how to open it up and turn down the small screw/knob on the inside. This will give you more range of adjustment, but it also allows it to get hotter before it starts going crazy. If it gets hot try turning the sensitivity down but eventually if it gets too hot it will stop working until it cools off. Doing the adjustment inside gave me alot more time before it cut out. Try to keep it in the shade, say under another rag or in the shadow of your detector while you dig, it helps me. I also hold mine in front of my A/C vent in my car until I'm ready to go, this gives me alot of time before it cooks lol

I went ahead and did the modifications / repairs yesterday while it was raining. I'm very greatful for all the detailed information posted by members, it made it a snap! Put in the new switch, vibrating motor, re- hot glued the poor glue job on the coil probe wires, added new knob for sensitivity and did the adjustment on the sensitivity by turning the resistor screw counterclockwise about half a turn. On Max setting I actually gained some depth! I also went ahead and poked out the five holes in the front of the cover that are covered up by the sticker ( they look like they may have been meant for a set of led lights to detect how close the target is by lighting one more the closer you get?) The reason I did this was to give the box ventilation and hopefully keep it functioning properly in the heat. Thanks everyone for the great tips! I will let you all know how it performs in the field, I can't wait to try it out.

Forgot to mention, I'm still gonna be ordering my Garrett when I get paid. I've seen them in action and they are great. I will always keep my cen-tech for backup or for friends to use.
