Simon,

Here's a ready-made thread for you to check out. And there are probably older discussions as well.

If you are finding stuff and satisfied, I would not upgrade? to a 250. I would hold out for, but wait, how much more stuff do you think you will find? The depth should be the same and if you know the machine, you will out find anyone with a $1000. machine who doesn't know his machine.
I find I learn something new everytime I go out, about my detectors.

Default garret ace 150 or 250

There was a post re the depth differences between the two machine a couple of weeks back and either Garrett or the U.K. dealer said no difference just the extra features BUT I met a couple on the beach this morning who had both models and like Tony they thought the 150 was either a little deeper or a fraction louder. I couldn't tell the difference but then a howling gale had blown up so it wasn't exactly ideal test conditions.
Might be interesting for someone who has both to have a little experiment

thanks brian, will stay with the 150 for now then,95% of my finds are 6 inches or less anyway so depth doesnt really matter

Simon....95% of your finds are within the first 6" BECAUSE of the Ace150. This about the limit with the stock coil. A better detector would go deeper on a more repetative level.

There is an upgrade coil for the 150 it is supose to go deeper, but I'm getting it because it is waterproof. I'm getting the 150 because of budget, quality, and ease of use as I suffer from TBI, and it is easy for me to be confussed. I can't wait to start pulling out all of the rusty garbage in my yard

The only 2 justifiable reasons, to me, to get the 250 are Relics mode, and pinpointing, and adjustable disc. Oops, that's 3! The Relics mode is right at nail reject and simply awesome. The pinpointer is for shaping and sizing the target. And when I get into tab hell, I go to customs mode-which is just, in my case, set as the coins mode BUT with the foil icon left on to find gold rings in these areas.

wow you know your stuff with the aces, I've only read about them, if I had the extra change I would have gone with the 250 because reviews of people that have used the three aces 150, 250 & 350, liked the 250 the best. yet, if yo already have a 150 and are digging up good stuff, it falls more into the catagory of wants vs needs lol, but than again, not too many people "need" a MD

I have both the 150 and 250... I like the 250 better overall because of the pinpoint feature just makes life SOOO much simpler. OF COURSE, you could do the "+" pinpointing maneuver by with the 150. Also, I like the fact that you can choose "better" sensitivity levels as well (i.e. 8 on the 250 compared to only 4 on the 150). The disc is more refined, if you will. Other than that, I use either one. I'm the type of person that likes to take something and see what I can do with it, meaning, how much performance can I "squeeze" out of this thing. For example, when I was younger (MUCH YOUNGER) I would goto the local computer surplus shops and go through their "junk pile" and buy old XT motherboards and "upgrade" them as much as possible and then just put it through a bench test. This was at the time that the 386's were JUST starting to get phased out and the 486's were just coming into play (i.e. about 1989-90). Anyways, the point being is that I STILL like the 150 because it is a good detector for what it does... if that makes any sense. Both come standard with the 6.5x9 waterproof submersible coil (mine did... and I bought both of mine at Fry's Electronics... a HUGE electronics store... at least on the west coast... don't know if they exist on the east coast ). So I have quite a few months experience with the ACE line thus far, just NOTHING to show on the forum as of yet other than bobby pins and pull tabs, which I have uploaded SOME "finds". My deepest find, which pertains to both units, were at roughly 7" or there abouts. I have a TEST bed started and have a quarter buried at 10" +/- 1/4" in the ground, and has been ABOUT 1month now since it has been buried. Rain, sun, rain... taking a toll on the ground, which is good because it simulates more of a "REAL" scenario hunt because the coin/object is acclimating to its surroundings, if you will. My goal is to START testing the different coils that I have on my units AND practice, but without digging the objects up as I don't want to disturb the ground. If I could I would even ask my sister to give me her wedding ring so I can bury it to That wouldn't conversation wouldn't go very far though OR deep for that matter Anyways, just wanted to add my 2cents in... HH \_

Default the different coils that I have for the ACE

sorry for a second post, but forgot to mention the coils that I have... ALL OF THEM... all the coils that are available to the ACE line including "3rd" party manuf... Thus they are:
8.5x11 DD (Garrett)
9x12 (Garrett)
6.5x9 (Garrett)
4.5 sniper (Garrett)
8x6 SEF "Butterfly"
10x14 DD Excelerator

Plus I also have the 350 as well, which is "SLIGHTLY" better than the 250 with the ONLY REAL DIFFERENCE being that it is 1) 8.25kHz for the 350 instead of 6.5kHz for both the 150/250 (not a whole lot of extra wave cycles there) 2) the Garrett DD comes standard with the 350 and 3) the iron disc has like 2x notches to it. THAT'S about it. You can look at it one of two ways, if you already have the 250 and decide to get the DD coil THEN you basically have a 350. IF you decide to get the 350 then you have the slightly higher freq and disc setting, but that's about it AND you already have the DD, which is supposed to be a deeper seeking coil because of how it works. One last thing, my next buried objects are going to be at 8", 6", and 4" and ALL quarters so that there are NO "variables" thrown into the mix. I do testing at my job, so BELIEVE ME, I know ALL about variables. EVENTUALLY, I hope to be able to bury dimes, nick's, and pennies. That is going to be a while... right now I'm just going to do the quarters. Anyways, HH \_

Yeah-no use spending when you don't have to. The jewelry mode is pretty close to the Relics mode and a/m mode is ideal for tot lots-some of those iron "boops" are gold. And some rings do fall in the nickel range on coins mode. I even pinpoint in motion most of the time with my Ace and you can even lift the searchcoil with the Aces and pretty much size and shape the target. Oh! Almost forgot! Get the sniper coil and at least double your finds!!
