Hello all,
Hey... I have a piece of rock that I have identified as banded iron. My metal detector goes crazy on this thing. Anyway... I have a bounty hunter pinpointer and it does not beep at all on this rock, even if I touch it. I have a harbor freight pinpointer and it beeps when I get within a couple inches of it. My bounty hunter pinpointer beeps on other metal objects, so why would it not pick up this big piece of iron? (I know what you are thinking, but I can't afford a pro-pointer at this time.) Any ideas on the bounty hunter pinpointer? |

Hello Squishy: I have the exact same pinpointer. I have used mine for over a year now and it is spot on. There are a number of threads commenting on the uses and pros and cons of pinpointers. I find my B/H spot on. I'm really not trying to be a smart a## but have you checked/replaced the battery? I have found that one of the down sides of this piece of equipment. It is easy to put in a new battery and not have it connected because of the way the cap fits on the end of the pinpointer. It has to go on one way and I even put a piece of duct tape over the end to insure a snug fit. Also, it comes with a little padding in the cap but a little napkin or stuffing of some kind helps. Of course, it is always possible that there is something technical wrong with the unit. I have had the chance to use B/H for repairs on my coil equipment. I sent it into Texas and they determined that the coil had become wet and they replaced the coil, tuned the unit really well and retuned the unit.... all at no charge. I just paid the shipping to them. The only negative comment I can make about the experience is that they didn't communicate with me very well. I sent it in, and surprise, it came back in about two weeks, unannounced. Now it works like a champ. I am always confused when I read the negative comments about Bounty Hunter equipment. I have found it reliable, easy to use with fairly good factory response. For coin shooting and jewlery hunting my B/H equipnment seems to work pretty well. Not many salt water beaches within a 1000 miles of Iowa so that isn't an issue. Just my 2 cents worth. My suggestion would be to call them down in Texas and see if they can give you some hints. My experience with the factory was mostly positive. Be safe always and I hope you get your pinpointer to work properly. Greetings from the cornpatch of central Iowa.

Thanks Kevin,
The battery is good and connected properly. It sounds off on my shovel and lots of other metal objects, just seems to have a blind spot for this rock. I'll have to try it on a chunk of cast iron. Maybe it is not seeing iron at all. I'll see if I can find the number and give them a call to see what they recommend. Thanks again for the response! -Mike- |
