Don't know why but I just got to thinking today driving home from my hunt how great it would be to find a class ring and be able to return it to it's long lost owner.
I know many here have found some so what I was really wondering is where you found them. Parks, schools, beaches, other? Curious which has the best chance of holding any. So if you've found any, please let us know where they were found. Not exact locations of course, just the type of place. Thanks __________________ |

I have a friend who's Dad did MDing back in the early 70's. He modified his unit so he could work the lakes near by. I guess he seperated the works from his coil and floated the working part on some type of innertube thingy to keep it dry while the rod and coil did the wet work. Anyway, one of his finds was a class ring from 1944. He was able to track down the owner because they were still living in the area, and he returned it to her 30+ years after being lost. They even had a little Human Interest story about it in the paper that is now in his scrap book. So I would suggest trying any old beaches, swimming holes, as possible places that teens hung out at.

The one I found was at a lake swimming area.
Best time to hunt is when the water level is low, because many rings are lost in the water. __________________ |

It seems to me that their was a story in the news around here about someone doing this. I think that it was lost around the veitnam war era and returned to the proper owner.

I have found four and was able to return them all but one. The oldest was a 1925 class ring and I was able to return it to the family of the lady that lost it. She passed away in the 80's. With a little research you can usually return them. Makes me feel good. Swimming holes is where I have found all of mine...d2

The second thing I ever found with a metal detector was a class ring, worn so badly that I couldn't ID the school. I found it in my own back yard, two feet from the back door, when I was living in military housing in Selma, Alabama, while I was in the Air Force.
I found my second class ring in a sandbox in the campgrounds of Indiana Beach, an amusement park. And I found my third class ring in a picnic park on the University of Illinois campus. It had been there for almost 15 years, only an inch or two deep. I'm sure it had been passed over by many treasure hunters before I found it, because it rang in as a pulltab. __________________ |

I've found them from school football fields to private yards to swimming holes.

When my oldest was in school several of the girls put their new classrings on over their gloves.
Forgot and pulled off the gloves. Band members on hands and knees for over an hour looking. I'll bet thats why football fields are likely good hunting for them. |

I haven't heard of putting class rings on over gloves, but many people lose class rings (and wedding rings) when they are worn normally, with gloves over them. Pull off the glove, the ring comes off too, and they usually don't know it's gone until they notice it missing much later.

My wife found one a couple of years ago, but not with a metal detector. It was before Christmas and she was looking for a pair of gloves as a Christmas gift. She picked up a leather pair of gloves and put her right hand in to see what it looked like. She became startled and immediately took her hand out and handed the gloves exclaiming that something was in there. I felt around and ended up pulling out a Senior Ring. My wife called the school and ended up taking it to the office. We got a call after Christmas break from a very happy kid who couldn't thank us enough.

The only class ring I have ever found was at a lake, it was an unproductive day of fishing and I began to walk around in the trees near the shore, I was turning around to leave and I noticed a flash reflecting from a crook in the tree I was walking past.
I went to check it out and there it was a 1950's Gold class ring from a School in San Francisco. I was about twleve years old and kept it. So in my case I would say look for areas that can (or could have been) old swimming holes.
