I found this at 7-8"..
I thought it was a bullet at first but after looking at it i have no idea what it is. I tried to disc it out but the detector picked it up in every setting. It sticks to the magnet like glue and is a odd shap..Can anyone tell me what it is? ![]()

I don't think it's a meteorite, but I don't know what it could be. Maybe just a stone with iron in it.

Was it rusty at all when you found it?
There are a couple of different minerals that are attracted to magnets. It certainly is a curious object |

Looks like a piece of magnatite to me. Which is a form of HOT ROCK.

I was excited when i thought it was a bullet but the coolest part was it was my first time swinging the Vaquero. I thought i was getting a false reading so it was cool finding something that small and that deep.

Your local college geology professor.
Very cool whatever it is. Is it heavy for it's size ? Marty __________________ |

it weighed in at around 4 grams.

I think it is a piece of iron.
Like this one I found yesterday.... 95% iron rust

It probably is iron.. I just thought it was a neat find. IT has a smooth black crust on most of its surface so it looks cool. My wife said it looks like a petrified turd.

Hmmm.... let's see...
What metals are magnets attracted to? Magnets are attracted to ferrous metals such as iron, nickel, cobalt, certain steels, and other alloys. Meteorites are magnetic too. Magnets do not stick to: Brass, bronze, aluminum, copper, lead, gold, silver, platinum, and most stainless steels. Did I miss any metals? __________________ |

Scrape the item on the underside of your toilet bowl cover (the non-shiny side). If there is a brownish streak it might be hematite. If it is a black streak it could be magnetite. If there is no streak, it is most likely a meteorite. Some very very heavily weathered meteorites will sometimes leave a streak....

Where did u fiind it. Could the area possibly be an old farm area. Thats where I find mine. I assumed my were lead. never tried the magnet on them though. Anyways maybe someone melted some metal at one time do a repair or whatever and what you have is spillover from the liquid metal onto the ground. Also I've found them in aluminum at lakes around campfires same shape as yours and my iron ones> just a suggestion.

If its a weldment then the smooth black suface could be slag> slag is a type of crust bi-product of a flux used with various types of welding such as sylicone based welding rods or flux cored welding. or just impurities in the base metal that was origanally melted.

It looks very much like a iron specimen metior. If it is rusted iron you should be able to crush or crumble some off by hand. I had a iron nickle specimen very similar to that. The rusted areas would streak as well as the iron nickle. Hematite well streak redish brown and specular hematite and magnatite black. try sand paper on a small corner where it is rusted. lay the paper on a table and rub the specimen on it so you can concentrate it in one spot. If the rust is very thin this would help to indicate the presence of nickle. Also this will tell you what color the base metal is. Ive seen three different colors of metals in on slice of a metior my freind had. But to really be this kind of metior you should be able to feel the weight as being close to a peice if iron the same size. Also try to get a streak from the area cleaned if its grey compare it to a streak from a nickle. If it passes all these tests go see a professor or geologist. Good luck I hope it is!!!!!!.

You should test it for Iron and Nickel. Is it very heavy for its size? What did it ring up as on your MD? There should be fusion crust on it. If you get one side etched flat you will see a Widmanstatten pattern on a real meteorite. Try a streak test on the underside of your toilet bowl tank lid.
