Default My first coin roll hunt

I've not been able to do as much detecting lately
because I've had to take in my elderly mother.
She has to have a lot done for her but she arrived
with a bag full of change and I found 4 wheaties in
there so she can stay. (just kidding- I love my mom)

So.... I decided to do some penny roll hunting while I get
my mother settled. Asked my bank teller for only $2.00
worth just to see if I liked it. The teller looked at me like
I had asked for a dozen doughnuts.

Before and after pics.

To the left are the coppers, to the right, the zincolns,
One wheatie 1952 and a penny with nothing on it,
maybe worn down by something,? I don't know. Should
I return it to the bank and ask for another one, preferably
any wheat they have in the drawer?

I can see how this can become addictive.

I skipped the rolls and straight into a box and then in-between boxes I picked up ~$5 of pennies each time

@creepy, I'd keep that blank penny. It may be a planchet?

Great idea kireta! It's a cheap and (sometimes effective) way to acquire old coins!

On average I find about 1 wheat to 100 pennies. But very rarely do I find a penny that's earlier than the 50's.

I have never really had a coin collection, and after getting into this hobby, I was thinking....why not combine the two??

Although, I cannot afford high-end coins, pennies are readily available and cheap I dont expect finding a 55' DD or a 09 s v.d.b, but one sure can dream, but there are alot of varieties that can bring a premiuim if you know what to look for.

Also, it gives me a cheap opportunity to learn about diffrent varieties, mintage, terminology , grading of pennies so on and so forth.

hopefully in the near future I can upgrade to mid-level then to upper end coins.

I have been reading where some people just specialize in on particular coin or variety of coin .. i.e. die cracks, error coins, proofs , vams, silvers....
dont have any idea were iam going, but as I stated , this gives me a cheap way of gettting my feet wet.

Isn't a planchet a penny that has normal edges but has never
been stamped with an image? This one is completely worn smooth
all over. Noone would ever except it for a penny and thus, the
bank owes me a cent.

I have about 300 wheat back pennies. $2.50 rolled, the rest in prescription bottles.

I have had them for years. I dont know the oldest one. I do have an 18XX silver dollar. My father collects coins and as a "starter" kit, I got a bunch of coins in an old Crown Royal bag.

I hope to add more to the collection.

Maybe I should try this coin roll hunting.

My last CRH was 15 penny rolls which resulted in 7 wheats.

That's actually pretty cool if you're into collecting copper. Not a bad investment if you have the time and space to collect and store the copper.
