Default Saturday hunt

Went today for couple hours to school where I found gold and silver ring, was nice day for hunting dig a lot targets no gold or silver today. My total for today is $9.26 in clad, 1955 and 1958 wheaties, broken thin junk ring from China and boy scout thing. Also got visit from sheriff I guess someone complained but he was cool with me detecting there. Talked a little bit about finds and then he left. Thanks for looking and HH.

Boyscout thing looks like the holder for the neckerchief. Had one when I was a scout many, many years ago. Congrats on the finds.

Nice finds. You know it really bothers me when other people have to mess with other people's good times. It's not like you were running around trying to break into the place, for goodness sake's you were MD'ing. They must not have anything better to do with their time.

The Boy Scout neckerchief slide is called a woggle. That must have a bit scary seeing a sheriff walking towards you as you are metal detecting!!

Yeah that was first time someone complained on me, but it's cool because I meet nice policeman who was also curious about metal detecting and was going to get into metal detecting. Also my mother in law teach in that school and I have permission to hunt there and always cover my holes and take lots of trash too. Some people are just like that, bored with life so they need to try and cause others problems. Thanks everyone for your nice comments and HH.

Actually not much scary, my dad and bro working for police department and also I do have permission to hunt that school so I wasn't much worried about what's going to happen just curious why he come and check on me. Also when he run my license plate on my car he notice that my dad is police officer too so he was extra nice. Thanks for looking and HH.

That's the reason to have permission. No worries. Good job.

Good hunt ... and interesting about the sheriff encounter. I checked with my local police about MD areas... they said all clear on public property, get permission for private property (makes sense). Then he laughed and told me about a couple of calls they got about MD'rs on the grass strip between the sidewalk and the street. Told the people that is public property and they were upset with him. "Well, we mow the grass there" and he said "yes, but it is public property." So, when I was coinshooting, I carried on with confidence, despite some bad looks. I smiled and waved. RickO

Yeah that's what I do smile and wave, nothing illegal is what we doing and people should care about there own business. I told my dad what happened and he say to me don't get in trouble so he need to come and take me to police station lol. He was just kidding. My bro say that you couldn't believe how many calls they got and its just stupid things but still they need to go and respond. Thanks everyone for looking and HH.

Thumbs up Meeting The Police

Well, the local police departments must have been busy this past weekend chasing down those "no good", "hole digging”, “trash collecting", "considerate" metal detecting junkies. I was in almost the same situation, detecting a suburban high school complex on Sunday afternoon and in drives a local police officer. He looked at me, probably thought I was insane detecting in sub freezing temps, waved a pleasant wave, smiled and drove away. No problems, it is city property and I couldn't dig a hole with a jack hammer it was so frozen. Just sniping for surface coins. Interestingly enough, I did pretty well for a newbie machine and a newbie operator. I have MD'ed for over three years, in schools and parks across our little corner of heaven, and never been hassled by local law enforcement. They have to respond when notified and I think they want to make sure we aren’t digging up any gas or electrical lines but with a little environmental consideration, we have never, never had a problem. Replace your plugs, be kind and considerate and most people will respond in kind. Not always, but most of the time. Within an hour or so of leaving the area, it started to snow and we had a couple of inches before the sun rose. 8-12 more predicted for later tonight and tomorrow. I wish bad language was allowed here.... at least to describe this weather that is coming. Oh well, it "ain't" real pretty. Congrats on your super finds and kudos to you for handling the law enforcement situation with class and honor. Our sport would benefit if all were to follow your example. Thanks for the story and good luck on your winter research efforts.

The Gray Haired Old Man
