Default Dirt Piles

In a field near my home there are about 50 piles of dirt about 5 foot high brought in by a dump truck. They all run together (not seperated) and I have found some antique horse bits shoes etc. These piles are very difficult to hunt since there is very little level area's. Are there any tricks of the trade to MD piles of dirt? This dirt came from a farm house that was razed and it was built in 1860 so I am sure there are more treasures in them.

Are you allowed to level them off? If so that's what I would do, I would level them out as much as I can before it's not a pile anymore, and more of spreading the dirt. Know what I mean. But other than that I think you will just have to endure.

Build a very simple sifter out of a card table and chicken wire mesh.... You may be surprised all the goodies you'll find that are not metal.... buttons, bottles, pipes... And just start slowly shoveling the piles through. If it's on your property then you have all the time in the world and it will also assure that you get everything there is to get in there without missing good targets.

Sounds like that has all the earmarks of being a very time and labor intensive operation.
Hope it gives up something to you.

Thanks for the suggestions. Maybe during the winter they will sort of weather down a bit.

They may spread the dirt out at some point; each pile is probably 15 to 25 tons of dirt.

That is a daunting task, and considering that you are likely only getting about 9 inches deep, think about all the goodies that are deeper. All you can do, without a backhoe, is scan each hill and dig it all. No easy way out. RickO

Im telling you the easy way is sifting it, take your time, you will really enjoy finding bits besides the metal objects. Marbles, bottles, trinkets, chinaware, pottery... And if it is your own property then it isn't like the fill is gonna grow legs and leave... you have as long as you need. Get a good shovel and make a sifter for under $20 and go at it. I would if I was there lol.
