Default My biggest one-day clad total ever!

Howdy Diggers!

Another great day to go MDing! It was 40 degrees at 7 a.m. and got up to 60 degrees by 10 a.m. I went to a Catholic grade school over in the older part of town. The school was built in the 1950's but the lot is quite old. Unfortunately, the majority of the original school yard is asphalted over but one corner remains and it has two enormous Sycamore trees.

I don't know how much MDing has been done there before but I figured they couldn't get everything. My first find was a 1946 wheatie at about 5 inches. I was thinking "Okay, off to a great start." The second target was a 1965 quarter also at 5 inches. Another good sign!

I spent 5 hours on that corner and found lots of clad and even more junk and iron. That lot was so trashy I wanted to give up several times but I kept holding out thinking I might get a silver or two. I didn't get any silver, but I did get my biggest one-day clad total. Got 49 quarters, 34 dimes, 8 nickels, and 38 pennies for a total of 129 coins valued at $16.43! I also got a very colorful junk ring. I tried my best to avoid digging zincolns, but a few got in my pouch anyhow. Also notice that I got 4 1965 quarters, that's got to be record in itself!

I noticed something interesting and was wondering if any of you ACE 250 users have noticed the same thing. Twice this week, I got a solid dime signal at about 4 inches and both times when I broke open the plug, I found a quarter and a nickel stacked together! I wonder if the nickel cancels out part of the quarter's signal and reduces it to a dime??? Anyway, after I noticed it, about an hour later, I got another solid dime and this time it was a quarter and a piece of tinfoil together!

Anyway, this good weather won't hold out much longer but I do have tomorrow afternoon off and I plan to hit the biggest tot-lot I have ever seen! I am hoping to get a gold ring or two, so keep your fingers crossed!!! Thanks for looking at my post, ON-ON and HH!

Thank you very much for the kind words. I never thought anyone would look forward to my posts! You are correct, I am using an ACE 250. I have been MDing since March and have been very lucky. The Ace 250 is very versatile and once your dad learns how to use it, I expect he'll be getting good stuff too. The best advice I can give a newbie is use it in all metal mode and dig everything until you learn what the different sounds mean.

I hope you didn't hurt your back carrying all that to your car. That is a lot of coins.

I use the Ace and have to say that the Dime thing has never happened to me yet. I have had a 50 hit and had a couple of quarters come out of the hole, go figure on that one. LOL, anyways looks like you had a fantastic day, I have never found that much clad in one day. WTG!!!

I nabbed a coin spill below the wood chips in a tot lot saturday about 7" down. It rang at a 67 VDI on my DFX which is usually a bottle cap or Zincoln. To my surprise $1.15 came out, 1 quarter like 7 dimes and a few nickels... The nickels may have dragged down the VDI. If there weren't any nickels a coin spill like that should have rang like a quarter or half dollar...

Also be aware if that is an old lot, you'll be missing any Indian Heads there by not digging the Zincolns and large tab signals... Also you may miss a large gold ring or interesting pieces of brass. If it is a small lot say 20x20 I would say dig everything but iron, maybe even dig the iron lol. A nice big nail or other chunk of iron in the same hole with a silver coin will drag its signal lower on your ID scale... down to a zincoln or maybe even farther... I've dug silver coins and jewelry that rang up as pull tabs and zincolns when in the same hole as garbage...

I have an Ace 250 also. I have had a couple of coins together or within 1 inch of each other. A quarter and a nickle id'd as a nickle, nickel and zincolns bounced between a nickle or pulltab.

The nickle really seem to dominate the ID in my experience.

I do get a double "High" and "Mid" beep when rotating my sweep 90 degrees When I have a double target. This includes coin/foil and coin/iron.

OHHH, I almost forgot what a great day!. 5 hours in a trashy area must have been a grueling workout. I guess it eased the pain finding 129 coins.

If you don't mind me asking:

What were your setting on the 250?, were you in jewelry mode?, did you notch out Zinc pennies and if so do you notch out the notch in between dime and penny also?

Curious Ace 250 user want to know?

Hey Billvert,
I was in ALL METAL Mode and did not have anything notched out. I have found that when a coin and a nail are together, the signal is a flaky iron signal that won't quite lock on. I think the coin drags the iron signal up a bit but not enough to get a high tone. I try not to rely on the display too much and instead listen to what my ears are telling me. A zincoln (depending how deep) can ring up just below a penny or just above a penny. Regardless of depth they make a unique sound (most of the time) and when I hear that little wavering at the end of the signal I know its a zincoln. Every so often I test myself just to make sure my ears are properly "tuned."

Those are some super tips for using the ACE 250 in the ALL METAL mode. I especially like the zinclon one. Very nice digs and photo. Congrats.

Found a target today that rang up as a dime consistently on my Garrett 2500 but when I dug it out I found a nail and a nickel about 2 inches apart, go figure! Too bad that now you'll have to dig almost $20 clad to have another big day! AL

My MXT gives me a 30 cent signal in those cases.
