Default Are Headphones a Must?

I obviously didn't use headphones with my 35yr old White's Coinmaster lunchbox when I was younger, and I'm not sure I like the idea of using them in the fairly dense woods by my house. Why? I don't want animals or people sneaking up on me! I'm a huge bass fisherman, and I've had a run in with about every animal out there while at ponds in the woods...I've even been tree'd by wild dogs. I've also been approached by people asking what I'm doing and such, and if I was zoned out with my headphones on...this would scare the !!!! out of me! Lots of snakes here in Texas as well, and I'd like to hear them squiming through the leaves if possible. Are headphones a must?

They are not a must but they help save the batteries and you are able to hear the whispers of deeper targets... you could always use the headphone made for 1 ear only...

Thanks....that's a good idea. My post sounds like it came from that product description.

I use the Killer B version (Stinger) of the Rattler in Texas and they work great. I have been wanting to try on the Rattler's for fit because the Stinger is sometimes a little too tight on my head. Always wear them unless freezing or picking up surface objects. Where you at in Texas?

You can hunt without them, but like many things, once you use them you will never want to hunt without them again. Even if you don't make a huge investment and buy the top ones, there are many headphones that can be bought in the $20-25 range.

I feel more connected and focused when I use them.

I have two-eared headphones but usually wind up searching with one side off my ear so I can hear what's going on around me. If it's cold I'll put them over both ears for warmth.

If there are other noises in the woods (steady fuzzy or low-rumble drone noises, like traffic), you'll miss hearing the weaker signals without headphones.

But if it's quiet, and there is nobody else around, I often forego headphones. My detector boosts weak signals so I can easily hear the deep stuff without headphones.

Many times I have the headphones around my neck. I get a loud enough signal without actually wearing them.

Good Luck Out There.

Never heard it called that before!

I like having headphones, they keep my ears warm. You don't have to get soundproof ones. I have some Grey Ghosts, and I can still hear things going on around me.

But when I don't use headphones, it attracts unnecessary attention to what I'm doing, and yes, I miss the deeper signals.

I only used them once. An early hunt with nearby homes so didn't want to disturb anyone.
Darn near blew my eardrums out. No volume control on the Ace 250.
Hence I don't care to use them.

For what it's worth, Wal-Mart sells a pair of Koss Walkman-type headphones for $4.88 that have a volume control built into the cord. Works for me!

Thanks Dan. That's cheap enough too.

I live in Northlake, TX, but my address says Roanoke because Northlake doesn't have a postal address. I live in a new apartment complex that is in the woods, and is about a 1/3 mile from the Elizabethtown Cemetery. Elizabethtown is a ghost town that was very active from 1850-1880, but everyone quickly moved when the railroad bypassed the town by two miles. The new town was Roanoke. There are countless old homesites, wells, old windmills and water towers around here. I can't help but think it is a goldmine for coins and relics.

Here is a nugget about elizabethtown. How do you go from a hotel, 4 general stores, 6 saloons, 2 churches and 2 schools to nothing in such a short amount of time? I'm pretty fascinated by it, and have visited the teeny cemetary many times. My new Minelab is in my truck, and I'll be starting this weekend. Holler if you want to come by.

While I'm the newbie here I'd like to suggest you look at canal phones. Something like the Shure E2C or KOSS Plugs. excellent isolation, no over the head stuff to deal with and you can easily use just one yet still have great audio in the one ear.
