Talking Two Large Coppers - Big Ugly Happy Dance X2!

****UPDATED WITH PHOTOS****

I was desperate to hunt this afternoon, but consider myself to be somewhat "out of good spots" to hunt. So, I decided to head down to a place near the river, close to our city park. There was once an old auto / tractor dealership near the spot.

The ground was full of junk. I mean, full of junk. But in a large clear area I noticed a rough circle of stones that was slightly elevated. So, I says to myself, "That looks like an old foundation or cellar hole." So I slowed down and really started to hunt the spot.

The first thing I found was a gorgeous piece of monogrammed sterling silver jewelry ... a hairpiece or something. I'll have to get some help on identification later.

But about a half hour later I hit on a signal that my Garrett ID'd as a half-dollar at two inches. I dug, and out popped a Draped Bust Large Cent! Boys, the dance was ugly. It was my first U.S. large copper. I would learn later at home, under bright light and magnification, that it is an 1801!!!

Then ... about a half-hour later, I hit another similar signal. This one, also at two inches, was an 1851 large cent! My heart jumped into my throat because I thought for a moment, when I saw the head, that it was a gold coin ...

Anyhow ... it was an awesome afternoon. Two large coppers on a single hunt (and until today I had never found one). I'm still shaking. And I almost forgot about the undated wheat penny I found, #99 for me this year!

Here are the front and back pics ... the 1801 Draped Bust is on the left, and the 1851 is on the right ...

What an awesome afternoon! Thanks for looking!

Geoff

(pacing the floor waiting)

(thinking I might be as old as the coins before I see the pictures)

(Can't you sing your praises faster?)

Remember: A picture is worth a thousand words....

OK, I'll check back later, AL

Very, very cool. I've yet to find a draped bust cent, but I have, on occasion, been seen doing the happy dance after a great find. Congrats!

Thumbs up

Awesome job, it's nice that you found your first and second of a cool find on the same day! The second one seems to have more detail than I'm used to seeing on a bunch of these large cents, that's great stuff.

Outstanding day... two large coppers... and that first item appears to be a monogrammed money clip for bills. Nice finds... HH RickO

Thanks, guys ... I'll try to take some better pictures after these two babies soak in the olive oil for a month or two.

Awesome finds!
I agree the silver thing looks like it might be a money clip of some sort.
It most likely from the same time period as the coppers.

Heading back to the spot this morning ... just waiting for the sun to come up. Gonna go ahead and take a handful of ibuprofen for the back, because you KNOW that I'm digging every solid signal today.

Well ... I pounded the site for four hours on Saturday, and for another two hours yesterday. Dug nothing but scrap metal. I hit the area from four different directions, just in case. For now, I will declare the spot hunted out. But I'll check it again in the spring after the rains settle the ground again.

I did go ahead and hit the spot across the road from where I found the large coppers. I've dug about 15 wheats and four silver quarters on that site, in addition to various interesting relics. I did manage to scrape out another wheat penny ... which gives me 100 for the year! At least I reached that goal ...
