This is just a short review of this powerful metal detector in the Minelab lineup. Even with the fact that I have only had this unit for a little over a week, I have found that it is perfect for the coinshooting that I do. I have been using the discrimination pattern for "Good US Coins" in Andy Sabisch's book Mastering The Minelab Quattro, and along with the 4 x 7" EXCellerator coil that I bought from KellyCo, I am finding wheat cents and other assorted items much deeper than I ever could with my Fisher 1266-X.
Since I am still new to this machine, I am getting used to the musical tones the Quattro gives over high & low conductivity targets. I have not yet ventured out in the All Metal mode, but I am still finding coins at great depth whether I use the stock coil or the small elliptical. I currently run the Quattro at Auto Sensitivity when using the stock coil & a setting of 16 when using the smaller one. So far the deepest coin I have found was a 1913 wheat cent at 9 1/2" on the factory preset coin mode. I am however still trying to get used to pinpointing with the DD coil, for me it's a big change from the standard concentric coils that most of us have used. My little wizard pinpointer has been a great help in this regard. I am beginning to realize that the people who either sell off their Quattro's or badmouth it, just do not want to take the time to learn it's language. I honestly feel that this is the best metal detector that I have bought in my 22 years of TH'ing, and I don't regret it for a moment. And to think, I almost bought a DFX... No, I have not yet found any silver coins with the Quattro, but I feel it's only a matter of time & researching our older sites here in Worcester until I do. I hope this small review helps other prospective Quattro users. OK, enough of my ramblings.... Time To Do Some Hunting! My Best To All, Barry |

I don't mind the Quattro ( prefer the Explorer ) but feel your being a little hard on the DFX that is far faster in use and a lost less subject to target masking though the use of the small coil will help there.
If it was for beach use I would prefer Quattro/Explorer over the DFX but bad sites with a lot of iron close contamination I would use a Whites. __________________ |

I don't remember whether the Quattro can be switched to "ferrous" mode. I believe it can. You will be better off hunting for coins, relics, and jewelry in the ferrous mode. When I got my new machine last July, the final decision was between the Quattro or Explorer II. In trashy sites, it can become a little "quirky". The recovery rate is a little slower than the Explorer, but a great machine none the less.

Have no regrets on the purchase of my Quattro. Once I have detected over an area of land with it , Im confident I have done a thorough job of finding targets. Not so with some other detectors Ive used.
You must take your time with it , I was frustrated a few times with it but things just started to "click" and started to find some old deepies. Its also great on the salt beach and ignors wet sand. And a plus is it can i.d. zinc pennies which come in at 34 on the screen most every time, which saves a lot of digging. Not waterproof though, so be careful. Love the tone I.D.sounds, too.Like a harmonica. My two cents Jim __________________ |

And another thing..Wormtown. Dont be afraid to go into All Metal mode. May have to turn the sensitivity down a bit, but it dont bite.

Hey Barry. Thanks for taking the time to do a review! That was pretty cool. Maybe we can talk the Admin into making a "reviews" section. That would be preety neat. For us, by us. What better way to learn about the tools of our trade.

BY the way, where is the headphone jack? And are the coils waterproof?

Coils are supposed to be waterproof, but there has been report of some of them leaking both Quattro and Explorer (same coil). Headphone jack is in the butt end of shaft next to battery compartment. Plug is put thru hole in rubber battery compartment door into jack The rubber door acts as a gasket as well.

Thanks for the great review.
I just purchased a used (15 months old) Quattro from a gentlemen on another forum. ![]() I've been using a White's XLT for over a year, and look forward to the increased depth of the Quattro. I'll always keep the XLT for certain types of hunting and locations. __________________ |
