Default Whats the value?

I coin roll hunt, and I will find a proof half dollar once in a while... I have found 35 total in the last 15 months. 4 of them are silver, im not sure what percent... 1968 1970 1992 and 2001 the rest are normal proofs, since they are circulated are they worth anything? Also are the four silver ones worth more than normal? Any help is greatly appriciated!

Hum..proof coins tend to appear only in separately sold sets..maybe there's a misunderstanding of a term here?

I have found proof coins in circulation. I have no idea how they get there, but the odds are that either a.) the coin was stolen from the collector, or b.) someone in the family popped a coin out of the collection for needed change. U.S. dealers will break up the sets and sell the coins individually.

The 1968 and 1970 coins will be 40% silver. I haven't followed mint offerings for a while, but I thought that 1992 and 2001 would be clad, unless the mint offered silver versions of those coins individually (in which case they would be 40% silver). All of those proofs should have "S" mint marks, since San Francisco is where the proof sets are made now.
West Point also makes proofs, but I think only commemorative coins.

Interesting. Here only proofs I've seen are in sets. I guess it's possible for a proof to appear in circulation but in this part of the world it'd be a rare thing indeed.

I also have three proof half dollars that I pulled from circulation in the last 8 months. I suspect that they were either stolen or spent by someone hard on their luck.

Yes, if you follow the coin roll hunting forums, proofs turn up fairly often. I often wonder if the mint releases unsold proof coins to circulation after the end of the year. Or maybe coins that are slightly flawed get released to circulation.

Proof or not, if it's in circulation the value has dropped big time.

It would still have its 40% silver value.

Forgive my ignorance here, but I'm just curious what exactly is a proof coin? how do I tell the difference between a proof vs. a circulated coin?

The thing people most get confused on is that a Business Strike can never be considered a Proof, a proof is its own designation! If the coin is a business strike and has proof-LIKE qualities, TPG services slab them as PL (prooflike) DPL (deep prooflike) and DMPL (deep mirrored prooflike)
