Thumbs up Brand new to Metal Detecting and looking for some guidance.

Greetings All,

My name is Jason and I am a 23 year old male who lives in Australia. After reading many stories and viewing many finds on this site, I made the decission that this was a hobby I would very much enjoy. Keeping in mind I am very green with this topic and I am sure it will take some time to become familiar with the finer aspects of metal detecting.

I have recently purchased a Bounty Hunter Time Ranger and am waiting for it to arrive in the mail some time this week, I do not know if this is a good detector or not, but still I can't wait to take it out for a spin.

So please, if I may ask, could you pass on some tips for a beginner from down under? I only hope that within time I too can be posting some amazing stories and finds on this site.

Thank-you all very much for your time.

Cheers,

Jason

Welcome aboard Jason. Since you have already decided on a detector, that part is out of the way. Next will be accessories. A pinpointer, digging tool or sand scoop. What type od MD'ing will you be doing? What will you be searching for? Nuggets, coins, jewelry, relics? All these points are salient. Give us a bit more information and there will be plenty of help. Remember, when starting out, practice will be a major contributor to your success. Familiarity with the machine, it's tones etc will be paramount. Which brings me to patience. Most do not find treasure in early outings. So be patient. Next, persistence, most important that you keep at it to achieve both knowledge of the machine and understanding of where targets may be, what they may sound like under differing conditions and of course, retrieval methods. Please keep us informed and have fun... HH RickO

Welcome from Kansas. Midway U.S.A.
Metal detecting is a great hobby. When you get your new machine, at first dig all of your signals. You will find that there are a lot of things that will read as coins, but aren't. That's normal. That way you won't start by thinking that there is something wrong with your machine. With a little practice, things will fall into place, Practice. You won't find anything if you don't use it. You next find might be the big one. Have fun. That's the real treasure. Good Hunting.

Welcome from Pommieland.Definitely dig everything for a while till you get used to the sounds your machine makes and even after ALWAYS dig if in doubt.Im sure Ive walked away at times when I should have dug through laziness.I now know a broken signal on my Elite isnt necessarily small iron but a coin on edge.Dont get frustated if you find little.Tomorrows another day.
