Last night I noticed it was raining lightly and asked my girlfriend if she felt like going to the beach to detect. I told her before we left her house that I had a really good feeling that we'd find something good. We wanted to do something different and fun. We had never detected at night and we figured the beach would be ours for the taking! Instead of using a bag over the ACE250's electronic box like I normally do, she had the idea of using saran wrap and it worked great. We wrapped it up really well and ran it down to a few inches above the coil. The machine stayed nice and dry. We hunted for an hour and a half or so and got 4 quarters, 3 dimes, 2 nickels, and 10 pennies that was the normal stuff.
One of the first targets we dug after finding a penny was a 2 dollar Canadian coin that gave off a really nice signal near some seaweed, that's my first time ever seeing one and I was blown away by that because I didn't even know 2 dollar coins existed, it's definitely a beautiful looking coin. I had been thinking about hunting the life guard stations for the past few weeks but had never gotten the chance. We hit the first two and got a few of the clad mentioned above, when we got to the third I went underneath the lifeguard chair and got a good signal, my girlfriend scooped and I looked at her face and saw her eyes light up and I knew right away I found something cool. It was awesome to see her expression, when I looked inside the scoop and saw the ring which looked like a wedding band, I had this huge smile on my face and said Holy !!!!! I told you we'd have a good night we couldn't stop laughing and smiling! Now keep in mind it was probably 9:30 at night and it was really dark out, we both thought we hit gold lol. We came to find out when we got back to her house that it was silver and had a 925 mark inside. We were happy nevertheless! What a great night detecting and a cool first ring experience. I just want to say thank you to all the helpful people on this forum, you guys are great! The advice I got about using the ACE 250 in jewelry mode a few weeks back was really awesome and the machine has been working unbelievably well! I hope you all have a great weekend and I'll try to get some pics up soon. Last edited by Beefcake; 09-05-2009 at 05:05 PM. |

Silver is still nice and yes around the stations is usually good however off to each side for some reason folks don't like to be on top of them. Keep it up and the gold will show up. I love hunting at night especially with the lights on my beachhunter 300...

florida, did your beachhunter come with lights or is that an accessory? I was wondering if some detectors came with lights built in already since I haven't heard of any before. I did go around each side of the stations, what I noticed was that there was an imprint next to each one of the trash can that they must put out while the guards are on watch but I didn't find anything around any of the sides except for a bit in the front and underneath. I figured that people late at night must jump off of them rather than climb down and would probably lose stuff so I did find a few coins in the front.

Yes factory lights led red is iron , yellow is gold, pull tabs and green is coins and silver.
Sometime go during the day and see where everyone is laying, that is called the towel line. That should be good., I never hunt the dry I am always in the water. Also after a storm it may be good as when the rain starts everyone runs for it fast forgetting they placed there rings etc on their towels. I don't think the ace 250 likes wet sand but I have done very good in the wet sand remember if you go a couple hours before low tide you can follow it out , which means at low tide the normal high tide would put people pretty deep into the water. __________________ |

Great story and nice find... you will find more in the wet sand, but until you get an MD that can handle it, the towel line (as Bill noted) is your best area. RickO

Great story and WTG on your first ring ! I prefer night hunting, no blazing sun and lots of empty space on the beach. I bring a small flashlight with a red laser pin pointer in case I need to get someones attention. That's cool that your girlfriend likes to go with you. A couple of countries have a $2 coin. I just got my first euro last week. HH

Thanks guys for the feedback and the towel lines idea, I normally try to envision where the majority of the people gather at the beach because I figure that's where I'll find the most stuff. I have notched down the sensitivity quite a bit on the ACE 250. The sand which is normally considered the dry sand has been pretty wet this weekend and the machine has done great so I have a feeling with the sensitivity down I might be able to do okay with it by following the low tide out, it's worth a shot at least.
I have an interesting update to my first beach hunt at night and first ring find on Friday. Saturday night I couldn't help but go back after I found my first ring, so I went for 3 and a half hours and came back with about 70 cents, a Disney china charm that broke off a chain, and a cheap hoop earring. I decided that I wanted to make it 3 straight beach hunts at night so I went out again with my girlfriend tonight and we found our second ring! and 90 cents in change. I'm not sure of the type of metal because the ring doesn't have the typical markings and is silver in color, or if the two stones which look to be a ruby and diamond are real but I'm going to take it to a jeweler to get some clarification. I'll try to get some pics up of both rings tomorrow! I hope everyone had a great weekend and thank you again for all the great feedback and advice. |

This is the picture of the silver ring my first! Unfortunately, the camera wouldn't capture it the way I'd like, so I just stuck it on the scanner bed.

Congratulations on your first two rings! I would really like to see some good pictures of them, close-up! I hope the second ring is silver, or white gold!
What sort of VDI reading did you get on it?I have never hunted on a beach, so I imagine it's a whole different ball game. I occasionally hunt man-made beaches, and sand pits at tot lots and volleyball courts, but it's quite different from detecting a beach. What do you use for light? A headlight or flashlight? When I hunt at night, I use a headlight in the red light mode, and also use the light on my pinpointer when recovering items. That's a great idea regarding the cling-wrap! I'm not sure how well it would work in a hard rain, but I'm thinking it would probably work okay in light rain. Let us know what the jeweler says about the second ring! __________________ |
