Default Gold and Diamonds

Gold and Diamonds...How do you know if they're real without having to run to a jeweler every time. I know Gold is NORMALLY stamped but I just brought a piece to a jeweler that wasn't because I thought it really was gold and it turned out to be 14k. Now I have something that looks and feels like gold again but it has diamonds and I'm not sure if the diamonds are real. Is there any way of testing stuff myself?

You might try using an acid test kit for precious metals. They are relatively inexpensive and abundant on ebay. Also, you might be able to get a test kit for the diamonds, but i'm really not familiar with them. Anyway, I hope this helps.

Google 'diamond testers'.... they come in various price ranges... you will usually find metal test kits on the same sites.... RickO

Just because an item is stamped gold, doesn't mean that it is. Lately in this area, there is a lot of fake gold items stamped 18k, but aren't. Most of it is coming out of Mexico. An acid test is your best way to tell.

I have only found one ring so far. I took it to a jewelry store and asked if they could tell me what it was worth. The girls looked at it laughed and said "nothing". But my two year old daughter is very excited that the "treasure" daddy found is going to be hers when her fingers grow!

Acid test kits are around $20 and work very well for the gold items.
