Default Unusual Finds...

No Pictures But Here's The Scoop -

In an area no bigger than the size of your average dinning room table, I dug 62 pennies, 3 dimes, 3 pull tabs and 1 quarter. What made the day all worth while was finding a 1929 D Wheat Penny. Afte the first half hour, I put the X-Terra 70 aside and use just the Garrett Pro Pointer, a probe, and my digger! Why so many coins were in one small area is anyone's guess. All in all, it was a very good day.

Sounds like the proverbial penny toss for kids. They had a 30,000 "zincoln" toss here a few weeks ago for kids in a grassy field.

Yeah ... A penny toss ... that's what I thought too. There's no other way to explain that many pennies being in such a small area. None the less, I am delighted to find them. "Pennies From Heaven"

I encountered something similar last month, and have been bothered by it -- it can foul up an otherwise good hunting ground with junk coins. I ended up pulling about 150 pennies from a 10x10' square area.

Only other theory, other than a penny toss, I could imagine is that someone accidentally dropped a roll or two of pennies. Then the park maintenance people passed over with a lawn mower and scattered them? I can't imagine too many other scenarios.

One time they lowered a small park lake for repairs. We detected along the exposed shoreline and at a spot about the size of 2 bathtubs we dug over 1500 coins, none old. We think someone stole a bag of money, kept the bills and tossed the coins in the lake, Steve in so az

I found about $50 in coins in a sand volleyball court once. Looks like there was some sort of scavenger hunt there. A couple of the pennies had been spray-painted green so I assume that was part of their hunt. Oddly enough, there was a silver rosie in amongst the tons of clad. Probably was in circulation and the person spreading the coins didn't notice.

Sounds like a good hunt to me...

I look at it like this....it may only be a penny but that's one penny I didnt have before and they add up in the end (unless theyre zincolns that are too corroded)

HH!!!

Some kids put coins in socks to knock other kids silly with.
I still have a knot in my head from my bully brother.

Perhaps sometimes we find the coins but not the containers
they were in, like socks or wood boxes which have disintegrated
over time underground.

Anyway, congrats on the wheat penny.

CreepyCrawler I noticed that when we were hunting. So that's what that was on your head ? , J/K.

Yeah my step son is a cubscout and they had a big event were they had 3000 pennies scattered in one area, They teamed up to see who could find the most. I think only 500 pennies were found. Myself and PILOT DOOD went back there and found a couple hundred pennies our selves. lol

Congrats on your finds!

I have three local parks where I keep find dimnes with gummed stars on them. One is from where they hold a Ren Fair every year. The other two must be used by a local metal detecting club for hunts. I don't see how they miss so many. When I was the President of a club, I buried a lot of silver coins in a park for our club to hunt. During the hunt a member said, "I found that Seated Quarter that you buried. " I didn't bury any.
