Default Underwater Metal Detectors?

I'm thinking of taking up snorkeling and underwater detecting. Can't scuba cos of dodgy inner ears.

Any tips re detectors, and is it worth doing underwater detecting?

I live near the Gold Coast, in Australia.

Not shure how good your ears are underwater but you might want a detector with a visual indicator like a fiser CZ20 or variant.CZ has visual and aural. There are others and some with vibration as well as visual and aural signals. You would have to research,I have no experience with them only know they exist.
Good Luck.

:!: How about no detector? Trust me it can be done if the right elements come together

In all seriousness, I own both a Whites Dual Field PI and the Excal II. IMHO both are fantastic MD's. VLF or PI...they both do the same basic thing...coil passes over metal object, one goes "beeeeeep" in variations. The other goes into a symphony of different tones and has the advantage of discriminating out iron.

Learning those different beeps & tones is akin to learning a new language. You eventually, after many hours of swinging your MD's coil, develop an ear for what's down there based on repetition. Follow me

Other factors to consider: location, topography, and mineral content.

For now just get what you can afford but choose wisely. Look around here and other MD sites for good reviews or just look at their finds

Better yet, take your hat off, pull up a chair and feel free to use the search function. Its what I do. Lots of wisdom flows through this forum.

Hi oldhorse,

I use an Excal II for my underwater hunting. Had no problems so far, and found some pretty cool stuff. The PI machines will go deeper, but like others the others mentioned, you will be doing a lot more digging.

Good luck!
Brad

When I'm diving I use my Fisher Pulse 8. It has impressive depth ability and is easy to use with the diving shaft. There's no discrimination but thats not a problem in deep water away from shore,
