Stranger things have happened than gold in a coinstar. I recall a few months back a young woman tried to spend $300 in $20 gold coins at a Walmart and was turned down and told to exchange them at the bank. A few weeks later, same young woman went into bank, was recognized, and arrested. Of course, all the double eagles were stolen.

People always say that gold and silver coins are a great investment, and that even if the markets tank, they'll still be worth face value. I'm not so sure, if Walmart didn't even want them!

There will always be people, banks, or other institutions that will recognize the value of silver and gold.
I don't put a lot of stock in the fact the employees in Walmart didn't accept the coins. They've probably never seen a gold coin, except when it's covering milk chocolate.

Talking about finding gold. A teller, at a bank inside a Kroger store, I know ask me to look at a coin she got. A teenager, not known to her, showed a $10 gold coin to her and wanted to cash it in, because no one would accept the coin. So she gave him a new $10 bill for it. She ask me what it was worth and if it was real. It was real and worth about $350 at that time.(:-)

I was a cashier at a grocery store when I was 19 or 20. While I don't recall anyone ever spending gold coins in the store, I did see one or two gold certificates, lots of silver certificates, lots of red seal 2's and 5's, occasionally silver coins... Most of the cashiers collected coins like me, so unless they came through my drawer, "seeing" those items was as close as I got. I did end up with a series 1934 $100 bill, several 1928 $2's of various series, some silver certs, and Series 1963 $2's.

Nuts.. I think it's smart actually.. have you seen the price of gold lately and most importantly where it's heading. Beatiful coin by the way.
