I read through some of the other threads and saw that every one had good advice on what they should buy, so I thought Id try my luck. I would like to buy one for a hobby. I am pretty sure I will like the hobby so I dont want to have to upgrade anytime soon. I dont want to spend allot of money that I dont need though. I like to go to the beach and play around my house. Id like to find gold, bullets, junk ect..... Are there any good beginner metal detedtors that will also serve a pro? I not wanting anything to complex. Id like to spend around 200 but cheaper the better.

John...I'd love to say that there are metal detectors at the $200 level that "will also serve a pro", but there aren't...not that we're "pros" or anything else.
For around $200 you can get several good machines that will accomodate a lot of your desires...The Ace 250 and Fisher F2 are the most popular. I carry a F2 in my Jeep for impromptu hunts and my wife swears by her Ace 250. The big drawback to good detectors in the $200 range is a lack of ground balancing capability. I realize that may seem a foreign term, but suffice to say that gb helps you get past the mineralization that is present in the ground...giving you the ability to spot deeper targets. That being said, there is a whole lot of fun to be had with a good $200 machine, and many great finds have come from the coils of such detectors. Let me welcome you to the forum and wish you good luck. Don't be afraid to ask for opinions here. As you've likely noticed, we've got plenty of them. We all started sometime too...we understand. Respectfully, John __________________ |

John, I am also new to the hobby and was debating between the Ace 250 and the Fisher F2. I did my research and went to my local dealer. He had both in stock and he recommended me the F2 over the Ace. I have been extremely happy with it. Still geting used to it but I tell you something, if there is something down there, the F2 will beep. The pinpoint feature is very accurate and useful. It also comes with an extra coil($60-$70 value I think). I will recommend it to any begginer.

I have the F5... the big brother to the F2 and I really like mine so far. Fisher is a good brand name for sure. F2 is very popular.
