Default My first post

Hello all!

I'm new to metal detecting (on a serious level). Here is a brief story as to how I got into it:

When I was a kid, my dad borrowed a metal detector from a friend of his. I don't know what the make/model was, but I remember him hunting his childhood home and then teaching me how to do it. I hunted our modern (1970's) home and found a few coins, but never really got into it. This was back in the 1980's.

Fast forward to this past Christmas. I'm over at my parents' and trying to explain to my dad Youtube. I tell him, "Dad, you can watch videos of anything...literally anything...Walley fishing? Got it. Morel mushrooms? Got it. Metal detecting? Got it." And it was on metal detecting videos off of Youtube that got me hooked!

I watched and watched and watched pretty much every metal detecting video on Youtube. My dad and I decided to go in together on a few detectors from KellyCo. He was thrilled to get into the hobby as something to do with me. So, we ordered a White's M6 for him and a Garrett ACE 250 for me. Since the total was high enough after throwing in pinpointers and coil covers, we also threw in a Pioneere 505 for cheap as an extra and one that a guest or one of my kids could use.

So, they came about a month ago, and the only way I can explain my experience is to liken it to Cole Trickle on Days of Thunder. You know, the guy who could race stock cars after only watching it on ESPN? That was me.

I powered up the 505 (the 250 was a day later being shipped) and in the first 5 minutes in my front yard dug a 1977 penny! I was sooooo excited.

I've dug a lot more modern coins with the only oldies being a '37 and '19 wheat pennies.

It's been an awesome hobby so far and I have learned a ton about the 505 and the ACE 250. I sometimes wonder though if I'm missing something that my dad's M6 would be getting.

Anyway, hopefully I won't stay lurked now that I have the first post under my belt.

So, hello all from Iowa.

Happy hunting.

-Nate Beam

Welcome from Colorado! I gotta tell ya', I also got the M6 along with the BH Pioneer 505 from Kellyco. My first time out of my yard I found a '54 Franklin Half, that was cool. I then lent the 505 to a friend and on his first hunt outside his yard he scored a 1916 Morgan Dollar! The guy out does me with the cheaper machine But really, this IS a cool hobby and you came to the right place! Good luck in future hunts!

Default Hey, cool story !

Welcome to the forum ! Sounds like you're off to a great start with a small arsenal of detectors and equipment. I'm saving for a backup / guest detector.
