Last weekend I did some searching around an old farm...it belongs to a friend so no problem getting permission. The farm is a working one and the current buildings are fairly new, 1930's to 1950's I think. However the interesting fact is that this farm has belonged to the same family since mid 17'th century...
They were doing some 'gardening' and had removed the topsoil around an old storage shed so the clear ground made an excellent spot to search. Now I spent maybe 3 hours detecting around this shed and covered maybe 10x15 metres of ground...and there is much, much more to search. What was obvious from the start was that the ground was full of iron objects...and I mean full. I dug out a nail or two for good measure and to demonstrate. then I simply notched out the iron and continued. found few bullets, some empty casings..various bits and pieces that somehow gave a good tone (a chrome-plated screw gives a really good tone. Not mentioning a washer.) Only things I kept wee the 8 coins I managed to find, dated between 1923 and 2000 The very, very corroded one in the pic is also a coin, older than 1923 for sure as it has a Russian imperial double-headed eagle in it but there is no way to see any dates or values. I also found a neat small padlock, also from imperial Russia era. It's been soaking in solvent and I actually managed to get it open ![]() But I will head towards this farm later this summer, and probably more than once. Voriax __________________ |

Korban, I found a pic of a similar lock from the webpage of a Russian antique dealer . Different shape but same manufacturer. Their lock was dated just 1850-1900. Guess they kept their models in production for decades. This dealer was asking 110$ for their lock.
Plenty of history for that area, of course those forts are off limits for detectorists. Voriax __________________ |

Stupid page, requires session cookies thus such direct link doesn't work. You can start from http://www.kotka.fi/index.asp , then select english from the top bar and tourism/history from the navigation bar.
Also this naval battle was fought in the area: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_..._of_Svensksund Voriax __________________ |
