Default Class rings... a thing of the past?

I've been told by younger folks that practically nobody buys class/graduation rings anymore. Is this true? I bought one back when I graduated in 1990. I figured kids these days still bought them.

Kinda depressing if its true. Its one of the finds that has eluded me over the past 10 years metal detecting..

I graduated in 2000, and pretty much feel I was the only one who DIDNT buy one.

Class rings aren't only for high school these days either. I just had to shell out for my son to get one for the end of middle school (8th grade) so I don't think they're a thing of the past.

Default class rings..

My 17 year old daughter bought one. But my 3 older kids didn't. My 22 year old daughter bought a key chain, with a medallion on it instead of a class ring. Maybe they figured they would just loose theirs, because they're father did. But it would be nice to get mine back some day.

I'm 26 now, graduated '01... I didn't buy one, I basically started working when I was 14 and paid for most of my own items throughout HS and after and it just wasn't in the cards to spend that kinda money on a ring, being as though I don't wear any jewelry and needed a car. Plus knowing myself, I'd have probably lost it by now and hoped some nice MDer found it and returned it like I'm about to do with a 1958 class ring I found yesterday...

I bought one in 1992... let my girlfriend wear it... we broke up... wore it for a week... Lost it.... Hopefully some metal detectorist will find in some day and return it to me....

My grand daughters each bought one, so probably depends on the area one lives in... still a big thing in a lot of high schools.... RickO

Current ones continue to be found and sometimes returned so I would say yes they are still buying them....

Both of my daughters bought one in 2006, as did most of their class.

Wonder what they have to shell out for one now? In 72 I think I gave about 32 dollars for mine. Never did wear it much.

I checked the sites of the two major HS ringmakers (Herff-Jones and Josten's), and neither of them gave prices. Not a good sign. I found a lesser-known HS ring company with prices from $180 to $750.

When I graduated from high school in 1965, gold class rings were $16.95, or $22.95 if you wanted a jewel model.

I have had to buy three of them. As far as I know they are still buying them.

Default Cost

My College ring cost around $575.00 so they are still worth hunting.
