I was MD'ing in a Tot Lot, and I get a reading in the +10 range, it says Small ring Foil, so I start to Pass but it is solid and Consistant so I pinpoint on it, my machine says 5 1/2" Deep so I start digging, and all of a sudden I see GOLD So I nervously pick it up and Admire Daffy Ducks Picture, and I unwrap it and it seems Fresh so I take a bite, and I Really enjoyed that Chocolate Coin, after I ate it all, I carefully took some mud, and shaped it, and re wrapped the Gold Foil around the mud pie , and re burried it for the Next MD'Er to Find:spin::tumble:

Default Finding GoldCoins

They are not easy to find......I have only one in my 16 years of Metal Detecting. The thing about it when i found mine, I never expected it. I have found gold gilt flat buttons that got my heart pumping, yet when this one popped out it took me a few seconds to realize what I had. It was a nice 1835 Classic type Five Dollar coin. It was only 15 feet or so from the road in front of an old foundation. Here in the north east you don't find may gold coins but there here, going west where you had the gold rush ....like colorado, California and areas out there you may have a better chance of finding one! Hope this helps........

What I have seen in these forums is that you can get lucky if you have the knowledge to know what luck just gave you

Hope that makes some sense

You generally need to detect with a gold specific detector that's very sensitive, specifically made for gold hunting, such as your Minelab GPs and SDs etc. Whites carry gold detectors too. Relic/coins machines aren't made for detecting gold in it's raw state, such as nuggets or ore containing gold, like specimen gold. I believe there are some detectors that can hunt both relics/coins and some gold, but the gold are usually small to tiny nuggets in size. I'm thinking of Minelab machines, but I'm not all that familiar with other brand detectors. Someone else may be able to help you further.

I'm trying to rack my memory....since I've been on this forum... I'm having a tough time remembering a gold coin popping up... VERY RARE! They're kinda the holy grail in detecting... Won't stop me from trying though!

While I haven't found a gold coin in 30 years detecting Arizona I have found a few nuggets. People around here go out for nuggets all the time. There is a gold club with a kazillion members.

Here's my claim to fame - left one I won in a raffle at the club. The ones on the right I got using a high banker - water & riffles job, about 1 hour from my door. They are very typical of the ones guys get with a detector. Steve in so az

The Zumbro Metal Detecting Club in Rochester Minnesota has about 50% of its members who have found a GOLD COIN. There secret is simple they hunt demo sites when they see one. First in gets the best stuff.

Gold?

Depends on the amount of “time” you put into the hobby?

……………and luck of course!!

Have fun.

My friend Bruce back in Minnesota had found one and was hunting a side walk tear up and came to this piece of pipe, well his machine would go crazy when he got close to the pipe, so he moved on. I believe it was a few days later and he was hunting the other side of the road and seen this fellow with a different machine working the other side with a piece of pipe. He watched as that guy could get closer due to his coil and machine were different. The other fellow found a gold coin very close to the pipe. It could have been Bruce's second. Thirty four years Bruce has only found one.

I've found 2. A 1979 Krugerrand that was part of a necklace at one time, and a very small 1945 Mexican Peso.
