Wink Sword and dagger fittings.

Various fittings (equipment) attributed by our FLO’s (Finds Liaison Officer) for the use of fixing swords and daggers to a person.

All found in fields at the side of main roads in the south west of England.

Third from the left bottom is a dagger suspension loop minus the leather(?) scabbard, you can see what remains of the rivets (two) under the loop?

Stay happy.

Neat. How did you research these things? I wouldn't have a clue where to start.

Thanks for your kind comments.

I’m old but I’m not that old so when I find items like these and do not recognize then the first port of call is our local museum for them to try and give me an ID.

We have also now two data bases online:-

Portable Antiquities Scheme (Museum/government backed)

UK Detector Finds Database (Private backed)

Both schemes are voluntary unless the item comes under the heading of Treasure Trove Laws, then it is a whole new ball game.

Also various forums in the UK have finds ID section and there are a lot of well informed detector users on these!

On a serious note, I/we have to resist the urge to make a find H.F. find.

Nice finds there Doug, I just wish I could get out and do some detecting.
I haven't managed to get out since before Christmas
