Question Adventures in coin rolling!

So I am in Indiana and the temperature is too cold to dig. I have started coin rolling and am getting discouraged. I started out with $700 of rolled halfs.
The three coins I found of note were a 1967 40% silver (with a hole in it!), 2004-P (key date), and an unusual 1980-P that is coated in gold. I have never seen this. The entire coin is gold...even the sides. Can someone help me with this?

The 1/2 is likely from a Morgan Mint Commemorative set (or someone/thing similar). They put out coins using 24kt electroplate. Seeing how I'm the first to respond, it is the best guess out there so far.
As far as coin roll hunting goes--try asking for "hand rolled" vs "bank rolled". Just had a customer pay for something using hand rolled nickels and there was a real nice 1936 in it. Good luck

I have a 1974 Kennedy that was gold plated somewhere around here.

pretty much like the obama coins you see on tv as well as that Indian gold piece. Worthless. The only thing remotely worth a look are those silver dollars at 19.99 and they are way overpriced. Basically everything that says "not affiliated with the us govt or mint" are ripoffs to gullible people. The Elvis stamp was the only stamp that made the US postal service a profit. Colonel Parker had it right....................Limit accessibility, have a commodity.................Laugh all the way to the bank....................

I agree - except for US Mint issues, anything sold as a "collectible" when new is not likely to increase in value.

I had some luck with bank-rolled halves back in 2007 - found a Franklin and several 64 Kennedys, and a bunch of 40% Kennedys.

What makes the 2004 a key date? Was it a low mintage?
I had a box of halves and I found a 2002-P, 2002- D, 2003 -D, and a 2007-D in it. I guess they don't circulate anything newer than 2001 normally.

These are low mintage years:

2002 P - 3,100,000
2002 D - 2,500,000
2003 P - 2,500,000
2003 D - 2,500,000
2004 P - 2,900,000
2004 D - 2,900,000
2005 P - 3,800,000
2005 D - 3,500,000
2006 P - 2,400,000
2006 D - 2,000,000
2007 P - 2,400,000
2007 D - 2,400,000
2008 P - 1,700,000
2008 D - 1,700,000

It seems the mint is trying to ween us off the half dollars. The low mint years are relative to the heavy mint years. I am particularly NOT fond of the "bicentenial" coins. It looks like someone said; "Gee, let's just mint a whole boatload of those!!!"

1976 - 234,308,000 (bicentennial)
1976 D - 287,565,248 (bicentennial)
1977 - 43,598,000
1977 D - 31,449,106
1978 - 14,350,000
1978 D - 13,765,799
1979 - 68,312,000
1979 D - 15,815,422
1980 P - 44,134,000
1980 D - 33,456,449
1981 P - 29,544,000
1981 D - 27,839,533
1982 P - 10,819,000
1982 D - 13,140,102
