Do you have a pinpointer? I have found that even a cheap pinpointer has greatly reduced the size of the holes I dig. You can get one from Harbor freight for $15. Have a look at this one. Mine is holding up pretty good to be so cheap and has kept me from even digging holes on a lot of shallow coins.
