Default unknown unusal find

while hunting in my back yard today i found this strange looking contraption. it is 5 1/2 inches long, 2 inches in diameter and has a 1 inch brass or copper (non magnetic) rod all the way through. it possibly has a very small hole in the center of the rod. the black part is a charcoal like substance that is bound to the rod. an ideas?
i will try to get a picture added soon as i figure out how.....

Considering there is no picture, I think you might be exactly right. Sure not bad for an "educated guess".

I've always wanted to try bottle digging. Could you explain to me some of the basic stuff?

For me.. I went to old properties and searched for bits of manmade trash in the woods... I looked for depressions in the ground... I also would drive around looking into the woods for out of place plantings... recently I found a area loaded shrubs and flowers and further into the woods I found a foundation or what is left of it... I'll hunt it maybe... I beach hunt so much I don't think much about dirt digging anymore..

i found this around an old homesite,i've been hanging onto it just cause i didn't know what it was.it's real "charcoaly" and gets black all over your hands but there is not a copper wire in the middle of it.It ain't like hazardous waste is it?be about my luck,i've got a bio-chemical,nuclier waste something or another just laying around the house (Hillbilly MetalDetectors Last Words,"hay guys, look at tis funy shaped peece of char-koal...uh...whys mi hare fallun out ?"

That bar you found looks like a bar they use to lock in place on old tractor hitches. We still use them on my farm on our old tractors. I'm not sure what exactly they're made out of, but they turn black if you leave them out in the rain or on the ground to long and it rubs right off onto your hands.
