That's why my buff's and my V(yep, also 75% copper) nickel came out of the ground copper color and will remain that way, cleaning or no cleaning.

I have never found a V nickel that was in better shape than barely recognizable.

The color can be restored, but at a price. I figured out a method that takes out the red color to dug nickels and makes them nice and silvery again. The problem is, it's highly abrasive so a coin with weak details like V-nickels may not fair well, and it's certainly not something you would do to anything valuable. But it works great if you just want the original color restored. I have no problem using this on no-date buffs or old non-war jeffersons. I wouldn't do it on one of my V's though as you may lose plenty of detail, possibly even the date.

I wonder what navel jelly would do to the nics, never tried it yet. How about lemon oil? we use orange oil on raw car metal to keep them from rusting, when we went down for long periods on time.(:-)

I wish he would have posted his method... it doesn't look pitted like mine do.

What I did was to take a brass wheel on my dremel and it takes the red right off. A brass wheel doesn't do near the damage a regular steel wire wheel will do.

I'm glad you reminded me about the nickle. When I get home I'll check the status as see what it looks like.

Never thought of trying my dremel, I've never seen a buff with no date start to come back before..It really surprised me.

Cool, thanks for replying! I've been thinking about getting a dremmel because using my brass brush on my hands really takes a toll. Actually, the brush I have now is steel...the one before was brass. Heck, I'll order a dremmel right now! You didn't use any chemicals?
