Default Can't return THIS ring!

Since most of my co-workers know I'm a beach hunter, I get referrals from time to time when beachgoers lose stuff and call the PD. Today, I contacted a very distraught young lady who wanted me to find her engagement ring she lost in the water less than an hour ago. I told her she was in luck since I had my detector and was planning to hit the beach when my shift ended.

I asked for the normal info you'd need to start hunting. Here's what she said "We rented a jet ski for an hour, and when I got back my ring was gone from my finger. My fiance doesn't know yet. Please help me!"

Before I could stop laughing, she started crying uncontrollably. I tried to calm her down, at the same time telling her there was zero chance of her getting that ring back. She kept crying "But you don't understand, I HAVE to get it back!" After several more attempts at common sense, she was still crying, but she finally calmed down to where she was breathing well enough to explain "You don't understand; my fiance and I came to Va Beach yesterday and last night he proposed to me on the beach. I haven't had the ring for a whole day yet!

I couldn't think of anything to say. Praying for momentary wisdom, I came up with this: "Honey, I know it's hard to see at the moment, but this is a divine test to see whether your fiance is REALLY the guy you should be marrying. She asked what I meant. I said "Go ahead and tell him. If he doesn't kill you, marry him right away." She didn't laugh, but I was rolling on the floor, doing my best sound serious on the phone. Thank God it was a phone call and not a face to face conversation. Does this mean I'm one of those insensitive slobs that women complain about?

No, but it proves the whole left/right-brain thing completely.

Default Look where she rented the jet ski

My fingers used to swell when I would hang on to the handle bars for a long period of time. She may have lost it in the water at the point of entry.

This reminds me of my lost engagement ring. We were married three months. When weather gets cooler, rings get looser. I went to the bank, drive thru, and the grocery store. After checking out, I noticed it was gone. I combed the lot, car, went back to the teller, and told the manager. I now believe that if fell into one of the freezers as I picked through food. (one of those horizontal freezers) My husband was a dear about it. He replaced it about 6 years later. I'm not fussy about jewelry, so I waited. Unfortunately, this girl didn't think to leave it home before jet skiing.

Wow... what a heartbreaker... but I would have checked her entry point just the same.... most likely gone forever... Sad tale, but I do agree with your advice... if he takes it in stride and gets her another one, he is a keeper... RickO

I always wonder about lost rings. My wedding ring hasn't been off my finger in years. I'd have to cut off my finger to get it off, it's on there for life.

Maybe SOMEDAY it'll make its way back to shore... That may be 10000 years from now.

I'm sure this has been discussed often, but man it seems like a lot of rings are lost. Just this forum alone must find 100's of rings a year? Think of how small an area we cover in the whole scope of things... nuts...

The beach is always changing Frank... everytime the wind or tide changes it could be opening up a good area or covering an good area... between platinum/gold/silver/junk rings in 3 years of water hunting I'm closing in on 400 rings... I still have most of them although my wife has borrowed a few

It sounds like I need to learn to scuba. I've hit beaches and stuff but without any gold or silver. Sounds like if I could just put my head under, I'd be hitting the jackpot.
